Donald Trump Jr. was mocked online Wednesday after blasting President Joe Biden's student loan debt forgiveness program, prompting "Trump University" to trend on Twitter.

Trump University, the unaccredited and for-profit company founded by former President Donald Trump, shut down in 2010 and soon became the focus of multiple investigations into illegal business practices and lawsuits from former students who alleged that they were the victims of deceptive marketing techniques and fraud.

The now-defunct university, which was owned by the Trump Organization, trended Wednesday on Twitter after the former president's son denounced the Biden administration's plan to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debts to those making under $125,000 per year.

"Why is there so much student debt?" Trump Jr. tweeted. "Because leftwing universities keep on raising tuition, while graduating kids with worthless degrees. That's why any solution to student debt that doesn't touch the billions of dollars sitting in the university endowments is an absolute scam!"

"Yes because thousands of Harvard Law grads need hard working blue collar workers to help them pay off their loans for them. Insane and disgusting," he added in a later tweet responding to Harvard Law School professor Laurence Tribe calling the loan forgiveness program "good news for thousands of my students."

Trump Jr. soon received backlash from those who were quick to point out the controversial history of his father's educational institution.

"Donald Trump scammed 9,000 students out of $42 million in the illegal unlicensed 'Trump University' — tricking them into putting the 'tuition' on their credit cards," lawyer Tristan Snell tweeted. "But sure, let's hear from the Trumps and their cronies about universities and student debt."

"Don Jr. cries about colleges' 'worthless degrees'?" he added. "Trump University was not a university or even a licensed school at all — but it made fake 'diplomas' for its students after they paid up to $35,000 a piece in 'tuition.'"

"Your dad defrauded students out of over 25 million dollars with Trump University, but please continue down the stupid path of crying about something you know nothing about," tweeted artist Tony Posnanski.

"You should start some kind of 'Trump University' to fix that," writer Daniel Kibblesmith quipped in response to the former president's son calling the loan forgiveness plan a "scam."

"Still mad daddy had to pay a $25M court settlement for running an actual scam university," tweeted film executive Franklin Leonard. "(And by actual scam university, I mean a scam masquerading as a university.)"

"Hey born-between-third-and-home-base, Trump university scammed regular people out of millions of dollars," actor Steven Pasquale tweeted. "The hell would you know about college debt. Now being indebted to the Russians ...Is something we'd want you to weigh in on."

Trump Jr. and other conservatives have attacked Biden's debt forgiveness plan over claims that it is not "fair" to those who will not see their debts forgiven because they already paid student loans or did not go to college.

The president defended the plan on Wednesday as "fair" and focused on helping "middle-class and working families" in response to the criticism, while suggesting that a tax cut enacted during the Trump administration was not fair to those who did not "own multibillion-dollar businesses."
