Fox News' Tucker Carlson said that the Democrats want to go to war with Russia and destabilize Moscow as payback for the 2016 election.
During his show on Monday night, Carlson said that President Joe Biden's administration was not being honest about the reasons for supporting Ukraine as it battles Russia.
He also claimed that Democrats believed that Russia was the reason that former President Donald Trump got elected in 2016, and said that Biden's administration wanted to destabilize Russia as a form of payback.
A video of Carlson making these statements has gone viral on social media and has already been viewed over 570,000 times on Twitter.
"Democrats have convinced themselves that Russia stole the presidency that rightfully belonged to Hillary Clinton, they mean it when they say it," Carlson said.
"That is why they are taking us to war with Russia...On some level the core motivation is just that simple.
"We know the war in Ukraine is not about saving democracy, please. We know it is not about protecting the sacred borders of a sovereign country."
Carlson said that the Biden administration was not concerned about these issues based on how they run the U.S.
The Fox News host also said that more Ukrainian citizens will die "thanks to the Biden administration's policies."
He said that if this was a true goal, the U.S. would push for a settlement with Russia now.
Peace negotiations have stalled since Ukraine accused Russia of committing war crimes by massacring civilians in communities near the capital city of Kyiv.
On April 23, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated he wanted to take steps to end the war with Russia.
"I want to stop the war and end it. There is a diplomatic path and a military one. Any healthy person chooses the diplomatic path because he knows that even if it is difficult, it can prevent the loss of millions of people," Zelensky said.
Until there is peace, he said, Ukraine will keep fighting to recapture territories that Russian forces have seized since the invasion began on February 24.
"The war in Ukraine is designed to cause regime change in Moscow. They want to topple the Russian government," Carlson continued to say. "That would be payback for the 2016 election. This is the logical, maybe the inevitable end stage of Russia-gate."
On Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki attempted to calm fears surrounding a proxy nuclear war with Russia, after Russian officials cautioned the West for supporting Ukraine and said these actions could cause another world war.
"It is not a proxy war. This is a war between Russia and Ukraine. NATO is not involved. The United States is not fighting this war. So I think it's important and vital for all of us to not repeat the Kremlin talking points on this front," Psaki said.
She noted that Russia itself has made several comments that a nuclear war could not be won and emphasized that the U.S. agreed with Russia on those remarks.
"That is important for every country to restate and every elected official to restate around the country here as well," Psaki said.
"I would note the president's view and his position continues to be that we are not putting U.S. troops on the ground to fight this war, and that's something we will continue to reiterate for Americans."
Newsweek has contacted the White House and Fox News for comment.
