'Under the Banner of Heaven': Everything We Know So Far About FX's New True Crime Drama

Andrew Garfield will put a detective's hat on for his true crime debut in FX's new drama Under the Banner of Heaven.

The limited series is based on Jon Krakauer's book of the same name, which saw the author investigate the double murder committed by Ron and Dan Lafferty, as well as the evolution of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).

When Will 'Under the Banner of Heaven' Be Released?

Under the Banner of Heaven was originally set to be made as a movie, but in June 2021 Deadline confirmed that it would instead be adapted into a limited TV series.

The FX show was filmed in the fall of 2021, and it was directed by David Mackenzie.

It's expected to air exclusively on Hulu in the spring, but an official release date has yet to be confirmed by FX.

Who Stars in 'Under the Banner of Heaven'?

As previously mentioned, Garfield will take on the leading role as Detective Pyre, a devout LDS member who begins to investigate a brutal murder.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, of Normal People fame, stars as Brenda Lafferty, the young faithful Mormon who becomes a murder victim.

Sam Worthington will appear in the show as Ron Lafferty, while Wyatt Russell is set to portray Ron's younger brother Dan.

Denise Gough stars as Dianna Lafferty and Billy Howle plays Brenda's husband Allen, Rory Culkin also appears in the cast as Samuel Lafferty.

Other cast members include Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens and Seth Numrich.

What Will Happen in 'Under the Banner of Heaven'?

Under the Banner of Heaven follows Garfield's Detective Pyre as his faith is tested when he investigates the gruesome killing of Brenda and her 15-month-old daughter Erica.

As he looks into their deaths, Detective Pyre begins to question the Church's teachings after he comes into contact with the suspected murderer.

Krakauer's non-fiction book looks into the deaths of Brenda and Erica at the hands of Ron and Dan Lafferty, who claimed to have received a communication with God telling them to commit the crimes.

Krakauer also looks into Mormon Fundamentalists and the leaders of sects such as the School of the Prophets, which the Lafferty brothers were once members of, while weaving their story into the narrative.

The TV series the book is based appears to only be focusing on the Lafferty brothers' murder case.
