A video on social media shows dozens of University of Virginia students sheltering inside a building as a manhunt continues for a student suspected in a deadly campus shooting.

Three people were killed and two others were wounded in a shooting on Sunday night, the school's president and university police have said.

Police are continuing to search for the suspect, identified as identified as UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones. Police said he is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who sees him should call 911 immediately, and do not approach.

The University of Virginia Office of Emergency Management issued an alert on Sunday night warning students to shelter in place following a report of shots fired on Culbreth Road.

Circa 10:30 a.m. on Monday, the university police department tweeted that the shelter in place order had been lifted "based upon a thorough search on and around Grounds."

A brief clip posted on Twitter appears to show dozens of students sheltered in a fitness center on campus. Some are seen lying on towels on the floor.

"Been stuck here since 11, the shooter is still running rampant at the university of Virginia," the person who posted the clip wrote. They could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Other students also took to Twitter to share their feelings.

"Incredibly distraught over the tragedy that has taken place tonight at the University of Virginia. With the suspect still at large, we are still being advised to shelter in place," tweeted Keoni Vega. "Serious reform is needed in this country, and young people must demand it."

In a message to the university community early Monday, UVA president Jim Ryan said that classes were canceled on Monday and that counseling would be made available. He said only designated essential employees should report to work on Monday.

He also confirmed that three people had died, while two people who were injured are receiving medical care. Their identities were not disclosed.

"We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional details as soon as we are able," Ryan said.

"Our University Police Department has joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect, and we will keep our community apprised of developments as the situation evolves."

In an earlier message sent to the student body, Vice President and Dean of Students Robyn S. Hadley said: "We have all received several shelter in place texts, and they are frightening. I am on Grounds like many of you; I am sheltering in place and in direct touch with University leadership and UPD.

"Please, please take the shelter in place commands seriously as the situation remains active. The suspect is armed and dangerous. If you are not inside and safe, immediately seek safety."

The university has been contacted for further comment.

Update 11/14/22, 10:55 a.m. ET: This article has been updated to reflect that the shelter in place order has been lifted.
