An employee allegedly trashed a restaurant kitchen before quitting his job, and a video of the aftermath has gone viral.
The video, found here, was posted to TikTok over the weekend by Dirtdawg420 (@dirtdawg420), who wrote: "So my expo lost his mind and threw every plate at us cooks and went out with a bang!!"
So far, the video has received more than 9.6 million views and over 300,000 likes.
In the video, a group of cooks can be seen attempting to walk through the kitchen, the floor of which is covered in broken plates and food. Dirtdawg420 can be heard saying "that s**t's crazy," at the beginning of the video; however, not much else can be heard because music was added to the post.
In response to a commenter who asked where their manager was, Dirtdawg420 said: "Managers were helping. The expo was always a [piece of s**t] every day, even when it was slow. He needed to go anyway, just went out with a bang!!"
"I honestly don't blame him either," Dirtdaw420 said of the situation in a separate comment. "The other cooks were antagonizing him all night."
According to other comments made by Dirtdawg420, the kitchen was eventually cleaned by the servers.
"Everyone avoiding [the mess] like it's not their job to clean up," commented Risteard James.
Dirtdawg420 responded: "Ya d**n right."
For context, an "expo" is short for "food expeditor." In restaurants, the expo "acts as a liaison between the kitchen staff and the waitstaff, which ensures a steady workflow throughout the various departments of a restaurant," said Masterclass.
"An expeditor is also responsible for facilitating kitchen orders, maintaining quality control, and monitoring food safety," the website added.
Speaking to The Independent in 2018, Tony Kim, former executive chef at Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York, said that the role of food expeditor is "a quarterback kind of position—you've got a whole team and you don't want to let them down."
"Everything could be crumbling around you, but the expediter has to be able to stay calm under pressure," he added. "No matter what's happening, you've got to be the exact same temperature: very cool."
Dirtdawg420's video caused dissension among viewers. Some commenters were quick to sympathize with the unnamed expo.
"That's why we need to treat employees better," said one TikToker.
"As a former server I can say [the] cooks probably had it coming," wrote Stribbs.
"Some of y'all cooks be mad disrespectful in the kitchen," accused KingDubx6.
Alexislogannn added: "I love this for him."
Other commenters, however, criticized the former employee for losing his temper.
"Doesn't matter how upset a person is...there's NO reason to treat people that way and make it even harder for them to work," said mchelle87.
"I literally couldn't even imagine doing this to my coworkers," commented nikotah.
"People should know what they are getting into when they take the job," wrote HagridsHotterBrother. "If they can't handle it, they should quit before it gets to this point."
