Shocking surveillance footage captured the moment a deer crashed through the window of a Massachusetts health and wellness store.
Boston 25 News reported that the break-in occurred on Wednesday morning at Hempire, a CBD retailer located in Amesbury, Massachusetts.
In the footage obtained by the station, the deer can be seen smashing through the back window, running through the store and finally escaping via the store's glass front door.
The Amesbury Police Department arrived at the scene just before 8 a.m. local time and promptly called the store's owner, Kirby Mastrangelo, to let her know what had happened.
"I thought it was a prank call," Mastrangelo told Newburyport News. "I thought maybe that it was a radio show or something. You know, it's Christmas and there is a deer coming into my store to go shopping. But then the officer said, 'Ma'am, this really happened and we will have some people on standby there until you get down here.'"
Police told the newspaper that the deer was later seen running down a nearby street, but they could not secure the animal before it fled the area.
"We eventually lost sight of it and there haven't been any reports of any deer since," said Acting Police Chief Craig Bailey, according to Newburyport News. "There was some hair and blood at the scene but there was nothing to indicate that the deer was going to go down for the count."
On its website, Mass Audubon stated that there are upwards of 95,000 deer living throughout the state of Massachusetts. Due to its large population size, however, the species has become "controversial," noting that deer pose certain health and safety risks and often damage property.
To prevent deer from feeding on plants or damaging private property, Mass Audubon recommended that residents invest in fencing and/or repellents.
"Fencing is the best long-term solution for coping with deer on property where they are not welcome," the organization said. "You can either fence the whole property to keep the deer from entering, or place fencing around individual plantings."
Those looking to protect shrubs can "hang bars of soap on the branches," the organization continued.
"Studies indicate that Dial and Irish Spring seem to be the most successful in repelling deer. Cut the bars of soap in halves or thirds and, using string or mesh bags, hang on branches three feet apart," Mass Audubon said.
Mastrangelo confirmed for Newburyport News that nothing else was damaged during the accident, adding that she hopes the deer is OK.
"We're just hoping to get an update that the doe is OK," she said. "She really jumped right through that door without any hesitation. So, she looked OK but I really don't know."
