Videos Show Iowa Tornadoes' Destruction As Warnings in Place for Arkansas, Missouri

Several videos posted to social media platforms across the internet show the devastating and destructive impact of storms that broke out in Iowa and moved across the central United States.

Warnings of a tornado supercell issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Arkansas on Sunday were still in place as of Monday morning, with southern residents warned to "take cover immediately."

A tornado watch is also in place in parts of Tennessee, Missouri, and central Kentucky.

The NWS reported on Saturday that three tornadoes had ripped through counties in Iowa, destroying homes and leaving seven dead, including two children.

Six of these deaths occurred in Madison County and were confirmed by Diogenes Ayala, the director of the county's Emergency Management Agency, at a press conference. The seventh death was confirmed by authorities to have happened in a city in Lucas County, The New York Times reported.

Ayala said that four other adults had been injured in Madison County with one in a serious condition and that as many as 52 homes had been destroyed. Asked if this is the worst storm experienced by Madison County, Ayala replied: "This is worst [storm] anyone has seen in a quite long time."

On Twitter, Cayden Jackson released footage of the damage that he had filmed on March 6 in the Woodland Park region of Newton, Iowa. The video shows devastated buildings and extensive structural damage.

In Winterset, southwest of Des Moines, where the NWS confirmed one of the tornadoes touched down on Saturday afternoon, the agency confirmed EF3 tornado damage.

This indicates the region was struck by extreme weather and winds of between 136 to 165 miles per hour. Classified as strong tornadoes, EF3 scale tornadoes accounted for just 4 percent of the United States' tornadoes between 1950 and 2020, yet also accounted for over 22 percent of tornado-related deaths in the country during the same period, according to the website U.S. Tornadoes.

A video captured from the air above Winterset by Scott Graupner shows destroyed buildings surrounded by debris and rubble. Some buildings in the video have had their roofs torn off by powerful winds while others are completely decimated.

The victims of these severe storms in Madison County were named as: Melissa Bazley, 63; Rodney Clark, 64; Cecilia Lloyd, 72; Michael Bolger, 37, as well as 5-year-old Kenley Bolger and 2-year-old Owen Bolger. The name of the fatality in Lucas County has not yet been released as family members have not yet been notified, according to The New York Times.

Many of the areas in Iowa affected by the tornadoes on Saturday are now being bombarded by heavy snowfall, according to the NWS Des Moines.

Des Moines meteorologist Taylor Kanost posted an image of inch-deep snow in the area to his Twitter profile during the early hours of Monday morning.
