The Voice is set to welcome back one of its longest-tenured mentors, with Adam Levine set to appear on the show for the Season 20 finale, set to air on Tuesday, May 24 on NBC.

This is the first time that the Maroon 5 singer has appeared on the show since leaving the series after Season 16, when he was replaced by Gwen Stefani.

Why Adam Levine is returning to The Voice

Fans hoping that Levine will be back on the coaches panel to restart his banter-filled rivalry with Blake Shelton, however, are set to be disappointed. The Maroon 5 singer is not returning as a mentor, but as the musical guest on the jam-packed finale.

He is not the only former The Voice coach to be returning for the last episode of Season 20. Stefani will also perform her new single "Slow Clap," while Kelsea Ballerini, who briefly replaced Clarkson following an illness, will perform "Half of My Hometown."

Levine, meanwhile, will be performing "Beautiful Mistakes," the new Maroon 5 single with Megan Thee Stallion. He said of this to Billboard, "It's good to be back on The Voice and see Carson, Kelly, Nick, and John"—in a typical bit of shade, he did not mention Shelton.

The former The Voice coach may not be returning to his big red chair, but one other coach will be departing (for now) for the finale. Nick Jonas is leaving the show for the second time, with Ariana Grande taking his spot for the upcoming Season 21.

In December 2020, Levine did a fan Q&A on his Instagram Live where he answered fans' questions about a potential return to the show. Asked if he would come back to the show, he replied "no thank you."

Asked whether he misses working with Shelton, he responded, "Blake who?"

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019, Levine said he did not miss the work that the show entailed. He said: "I was constantly working for so many years—very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that—but to just be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever. Now I'm a stay-at-home dad. I just stay at home and do very little."

Though he has been away from The Voice for two years, he recently worked with Shelton on a T-Mobile commercial that saw Levine set Shelton up on a blind date with now-fiancée Stefani.

The Voice finale will also see Season 20 crown its winner, with Cam Anthony, Rachel Mac, Victor Solomon, Jordan Matthew Young and Kenzie Wheeler competing for the top prize.

The Voice Season 20 finale airs on Tuesday, May 24 at 8 p.m ET / 7 p.m. CT on NBC.
