Walmart Shooting Kills Several, Police Say

Police are responding to a report of an active shooter at a Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Virginia, where multiple fatalities have been reported.

According to a report by WAVY 10, police received reports of gunfire on Battlefield Boulevard at 10:12 p.m. Tuesday.

Leo Kosinski, public information officer for the Chesapeake Police Department, told the outlet that multiple fatalities and injuries have been reported and police are clearing the building. Authorities have also confirmed that the shooter is dead.

The number of victims and the extent of the injuries are unclear at this time.

Michelle Wolf, a WAVY correspondent at the scene of the shooting, reported that it's unclear whether the shooter was a store employee.

Wolf said she was able to count at least 40 cop cars who responded to the store.

"They are just lining the parking lot up and down where the Walmart is," Wolf said during a broadcast. "It looks like, and I'm not trying to be funny, this is a serious matter. It looks like a holiday parade. That's how many lights I'm looking at right now."

In an interview with Kosinski posted by Wolf on Twitter, the spokesperson said police believe there was only one shooter and that police did not fire any shots.

According to Kosinski, officers said fatalities did not exceed 10, while confirming that there was at least one person found dead outside the store. The gunfire occurred inside the building, police said.

Virginia State Senator Lionell Spruill, who represents Chesapeake's district, wrote on Twitter Tuesday evening to "keep my City in your prayers as we have become the latest to be a casualty of senseless #gunviolence."

"I am just beyond words right now!" Spruill wrote in a following post. "Hold your loved ones close my friends !!"

State Senator L. Louise Lucas, who will represent Chesapeake's district next year, also took to her Twitter account Tuesday, writing that she was "absolutely heartbroken that America's latest mass shooting took place in a Walmart in my district."

"I will not rest until we find the solutions to end this gun violence epidemic in our country that has taken so many lives," Lucas added.

According to Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group, there have been at least 605 mass shootings this year in the U.S. as of Sunday. The group defines an incident as a mass shooting if at least four people were injured or killed.

The latest high-profile shooting occurred in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Saturday night at an LGBTQ nightclub, in which 22-year-old Anderson Aldrich is accused of killing five people and injuring 18 others.
