Over a decade after it launched, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is finally getting an overdue sequel.

The original game debuted in September 2011 and was generally well-received by fans and critics alike. Its unique blend of third-person shooting and hack-and-slash combat was the main subject of praise, but it was also lauded for faithfully capturing the feel of the model wargame upon which it was based.

While Space Marine was a hit, it was not enough of a blockbuster to warrant a hasty turnaround for a sequel.

In fact, the game (which was intended to kick-off a trilogy) actually ended on a frustrating cliff-hanger, with protagonist Titus being investigated by the Inquisition for heresy charges.

For years, this dangling plot thread has been left unresolved. Yet fans can now take a collective sigh of relief, as narrative closure will soon be delivered in the form of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (a true mouthful of a title).

The sequel was announced during yesterday's Game Awards livestream, where a worldwide premiere trailer also debuted. The clip doesn't give you all that much to go on, as it's largely comprised of pre-rendered cinematic footage.

However, there is a small taster reel of gameplay right at the end, which does offer a glimpse at the frenetic combat that's in store. You can also see that the franchise has been given a next-gen coat of paint, courtesy of the advanced Xbox Series X and PS5 hardware.

At the time of writing, there is no official word on when Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 will be released, but we do know what platforms it launch be on.

According to the website, you will be able to play it on the Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.

Given that Space Marine 2's launch is probably quite some way off, it could be that those older consoles are no longer supported by the time it finally comes out.

Space Marine 2 is not being made by the same team who brought you the first instalment.

Instead, Relic Entertainment will be replaced by Saber Interactive. This studio is best known for its work in remastering older titles, as they were responsible for things such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the Nintendo Switch port of The Witcher 3 and Crysis Remastered.

Meanwhile, Space Marine 2 will be published by Focus Entertainment, which is known for producing mid-budget tier games like A Plague's Tale: Innocence, and this year's Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

If you cannot wait and need a fix of the Warhammer 40,000 universe right now, you can tide yourself over with Battlesector, which was recently added to the Xbox Game Pass service.
