Watch Weeks-Old Labrador Retriever Puppy's Hilarious Reaction to Reflection

Adorable animals have been a favorite part of the internet since its inception, from puppies cuddling up with kittens to an adorable dog making sure all of his toys get their own food and water, the viral potential of our animal friends is endless.

One Labrador puppy has become the latest internet sensation after a video of her being frightened of her own reflection was viewed thousands of times on TikTok.

In the video shared by Zhané from West London, U.K. who runs the account thats.so.river, the chocolate Labrador retriever walks into the room with a giant mirror where she is shocked by what is looking back at her.

Just 9 weeks old in the video, River the dog barks and shouts at her reflection in footage that viewers have called "adorable."

In 1970, psychologist Gordon G. Gallup, Jr. developed a self-awareness test for animals. During the test, the animal's body is secretly marked—for example with a red dye on the face—and the animal is given access to the mirror.

They are then observed to see if they understand they are looking at themselves or another animal, for example touching the mark on themselves while looking in the mirror or turning their body to get a better look.

Mirror self-recognition was only found in a few animal species—and dogs were not one of them, explaining why River was so shocked to see herself in the mirror.

Zhané told Newsweek: "It was the first time she had seen her reflection and she was hiding underneath the bed because of it. Eventually, she felt brave enough to come out and tell her reflection off."

Despite not being able to recognize their reflection as themselves, dogs do eventually get used to seeing the mysterious being in mirrors, which is why you might notice that your dog isn't as worried about your bedroom mirror as the Labrador in the video.

"When my dog was small he wouldn't go near the mirror because he was afraid of the other dog," shared another pet owner on TikTok. While another commenter was overjoyed with the adorable footage and said: "Oh my goodness, cutest thing EVER. Adorable adorable."

Now 6 months old, Zhané said that River did eventually make peace with her reflection. "It took River a couple of weeks to get used to her reflection," explained her owner: "She still finds that mirror strange but is fine with all other mirrors."

Earlier this month, one dog that was slightly unimpressed with its new puppy friend captured hearts online after a video of their first meeting gained millions of views.

Enthusiastic Lemon the puppy proved to be a little too much for resident dog Mango, who tediously glanced at the small dog before turning away.
