A guest at a wedding was fatally shot by police in Winter Park, Florida, after an altercation with officers, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call about a disturbance at the Winter Park Library & Events Center on Morse Boulevard at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Winter Park Police Department said in a statement provided to Newsweek on Sunday morning.

"The caller advised of a subject who was assaulting guests at the wedding reception," the police department said.

Around 200 people were attending the wedding reception, according to local media reports.

A responding officer who tried to talk to the suspect was attacked, according to police.

"On arrival, one of the officers began speaking with the subject when the officer was physically attacked by the subject, leaving the officer unconscious and on the ground," police said in the statement.

A second officer who arrived at the scene found the first unresponsive and was also attacked. That officer then shot the man, according to police.

The suspect "physically attacked the second arriving officer, as the crowd began to surround the injured officers," police said. "During the physical altercation, the officer discharged his weapon."

Police said the suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, where he later died of his injury.

Both officers were also transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-threatening, police said.

The suspect's identity was not released, but he was in his 30s, according to WESH.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, police said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure, police added.

No further details about the incident were immediately released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been contacted for additional comment.

The incident occurred on the same night as another person was killed in an officer-involved shooting across the country in Portland, Oregon.

Officers had been dispatched to the 900 block of Southwest Broadway Drive at around 6:40 p.m. local time on Saturday on a disturbance call, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau.

"While officers were en route, they were updated by dispatch that shots had been fired," the release said.

"Central Precinct activated a 'shelter in place' order and set up a perimeter. While the incident was being investigated, an officer involved shooting occurred. The subject of the officer involved shooting died at the scene, and no officers were hurt."
