Taylor Sheridan's latest Yellowstone prequel series, 1923, is almost here, and the most recent trailer has given viewers more clues about the Dutton family tree.
Last year's popular series 1883 introduced audiences to John Dutton, while Yellowstone features his great-grandson John Dutton Jr., although the upcoming 1923 will focus on the family members in between.
The latest trailer for 1923 aired on Sunday night, giving a closer look at the characters set to be played by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, the latest members of the Dutton family, as well as the supporting cast which includes Timothy Dalton, Robert Patrick and Jerome Flynn.
If you're wondering how it all ties together, here's a guide on what we know about the Dutton family tree so far, from the elders of 1883, to the newcomers of 1923, and the familiar faces of Yellowstone.

How 1883 and 1923 Tie Together
While James Dutton (Tim McGraw) was the lead of 1883, his brother Jacob Dutton (Ford) is the patriarch of 1923. In the former, we also met their sister Claire Dutton (Dawn Olivieri) but she died early on in that series.
As far as we know, there were only ever the three siblings.
The next generation after James, Jacob and Claire appear to come from James alone. It's not known yet (and it hasn't been listed in any of the character guides released by Paramount) whether Jacob has any children, but we know that Claire's only child, Mary Abel, died.

James and his wife Margaret (Faith Hill) had three children, Elsa, John and Spencer Dutton. The finale of 1883 saw the death of Elsa Dutton, but as we know that's how the family came to settle at the Yellowstone ranch in Yellowstone.
John and Spencer Dutton are the surviving members of the family and we see them both again in 1923. John was involved in 1883, but Spencer was only seen in Yellowstone flashbacks, meaning he was born after the year 1883.
The Dutton Family in 1923
Set forty years after the events of 1883, John (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) are in their thirties and forties. Spencer is described as having witnessed the horrors of World War I, which we see briefly in the new trailer, while John is the right-hand man to his uncle, Jacob.

Jacob is married to Cara Dutton (Mirren), who from the sounds of her accent in the latest trailers for 1923, is an Irish immigrant. She's not the only one born elsewhere, as Dalton and Julia Schlaepfer both play characters with British accents.
As many Yellowstone fans know, John Dutton is the grandfather of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner).
In 1923 we meet his wife Emma Dutton (Marley Shelton) and their son Jack Dutton, a "dedicated rancher who is deeply loyal to his family."
For those keeping track, Jack is John Dutton III's uncle.
How 1923 Relates to Yellowstone
So we will meet John Dutton III's uncle Jack in 1923, but it's not yet clear whether we'll meet his father, John Dutton Jr. We have seen an older version of this character in Season 2 of Yellowstone.
To clarify, John Dutton III's great grandfather is James (McGraw) and his great-great uncle is Jacob (Ford). His own grandfather is John (Dale) and his grandmother is Emma (Shelton).
Yellowstone's Governor Dutton revealed in Season 5 Episode 4 that he also had a brother, but he only lived for 18 hours before dying as a baby.

With his late wife, Evelyn John Dutton III has had four children: Lee, Kayce, Beth and their adopted son Jamie. Lee died in the very first episode of Yellowstone, and Beth famously can't have children.
Kayce's son Tate Dutton carries the family name, though he and wife Monica also had another son, John Dutton IIII was also born premature and lived for just an hour. Jamie also has a son which no one in the family except Beth currently knows about.
So that's everything we know about the Dutton family history so far, from James Dutton in 1883, to his great great-great grandson Tate Dutton in Yellowstone.
