The Last Kingdom Season 5 is streaming on Netflix now and whilst the final season saw many deaths, it also saw some of the show's side characters thrust into the spotlight.
This time around, audiences finally got to see a little bit more of Osbert, played by up-and-coming actor Olly Rhodes. Who is Osbert and what happened to him? Newsweek has everything you need to know.
Warning: This article has spoilers about the ending of The Last Kingdom Season 5.
Who Is Osbert?
Osbert in The Last Kingdom is the third, youngest son of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon).
His name is of great significance in Anglo-Saxon England in the world of The Last Kingdom. Fans may remember Uhtred was baptized Osbert when he was born but was re-baptized with his father's name—Uhtred—when his older brother died.
Back in Season 3 of The Last Kingdom, Uhtred's wife Gisela (Peri Baumeister) died giving birth to Osbert, and with Uhtred fighting the Viking invasions and in mourning, Osbert was left to be adopted by the church.
Osbert is the younger brother of Young Uhtred (Finn Elliot) and his sister Stiorra (Ruby Hartley).
What Happened to Osbert?
At the end of The Last Kingdom Season 5, Uhtred was finally reunited with his youngest son but unfortunately for audiences, it takes place off-screen.
Following Uhtred's victory at Bebbanburg, Hild (Eva Birthistle) rushed to Bebbanburg with Osbert, now a teenager, who is eager to hear all about his father's victories after spending the majority of his life not knowing who Uhtred was.
In Season 5, Episode 5 of The Last Kingdom, Osbert's arrival was teased when his older brother, Young Uhtred (Finn Elliot) asked about Osbert's wellbeing.
After Young Uhtred was castrated by Brida (Emily Cox), Uhtred feared for his bloodline, prompting Young Uhtred to ask about his "hidden son."
Uhtred simply replied: "his time will come," teasing a reunion could be on the cards and thankfully, fans got the moment they had been hoping for since Osbert's birth in Season 3.
As Hild and Osbert walked towards the fortress at Bebbanburg, Osbert asked: "Why are we going to the fortress?"
When Hild explained they were on their way to meet the new Lord of Bebbanburg, Osbert moaned: "Why? Is this a trick to make me learn scripture?"
"I know better than that, Osbert. I made a little inquiry and I think the new lord may be able to tell you something of your origins," Hild replied.
With Osbert finally meeting his father and finding out who he really is, there is a pretty big chance Osbert could play a big role in the upcoming The Last Kingdom film, Seven Kings Must Die.
If the film sticks close to the original source material, The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, Osbert will go on to become a great warrior and his father's heir.
The Last Kingdom's executive producer Nigel Marchant explained to Radio Times why Osbert did not make as much of an appearance in the series.
He said: "There was a conscious decision about who we really wanted and who is propelling the story along. We didn't want to cheat the audience by not meeting the characters and going on a journey with them.
"There's a lot of characters in any ensemble piece and that means there's a lot of mouths to feed for the writer."
