California Fire, Map, Update as 23 Major Wildfires Still Burning Across the State

More than 16,400 firefighters continue to battle 23 major wildfires in California, according to the latest report by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

"Humidity recovery remains slow, continuing the increased fire danger," the fire department warned on Tuesday.

"Seasonal and potentially below average temperatures are expected this weekend, with a chance of some precipitation in the portions of the state. This reprieve in decreased fire weather potential is short-lived, as a warming and drying pattern is expected to return early next week," it added.

More than 8,300 wildfires have burned over four million acres of California to date, with 31 deaths reported and 8,819 structures destroyed.

Here are the latest updates on some of the major fires across the state:

August Complex Fire

• Location: Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Tehama, Glenn, Lake, Colusa counties
• Acres: 1,008,590
• Containment: 60 percent
• Fatalities: 1

The August Complex Fire is divided into four zones—Northwest, Northeast, South and West.

In the Northeast Zone, "the fire north of Round Mountain continues to back down into terrain that is difficult to access," while good progress was made on putting out spot fires on the east side of the South Fork Ridge in the Northwest Zone, Cal Fire reported on Tuesday.

Smoke is expected to persist over the August Complex Fire area and will likely be more prevalent than Tuesday, according to the latest report Wednesday from the Incident Information System of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).

Around 2,500 firefighters were reported to be battling the fire in the West Zone, where "dynamic fire behavior remained above the community of Zenia," Cal Fire said.

Evacuation orders have been reduced to warnings near the Elk Creek and Big Signal Peak areas of Mendocino County. Evacuation orders, warnings and road closures remain in place in different parts of Mendocino, Trinity, Humboldt and Lake counties. See Cal Fire's full report for details.

Glass Fire

• Location: Napa and Sonoma counties
• Acres: 67,050
• Containment: 54 percent
• Structures threatened: 20,324.

"Rugged terrain in the northern portion of the Glass Fire continues to show fire activity, driven by steep slopes and heavy, dry fuels," Cal Fire noted Tuesday.

"Interior islands and smoldering, heavy fuels remain active throughout the remainder of the fire area," while "heavy dead and down fuels continue to threaten the fire line," the report said.

Evacuation orders have been reduced to warnings in parts of the city of St. Helena and Napa County, while evacuation warnings have been lifted in parts of Sonoma County. See Cal Fire's full report for details.

Creek Fire

• Location: Fresno and Madera counties
• Acres: 326,706
• Containment: 49 percent

The fire remained active in the Kaiser Pass Road area, firefighters actively engaged in suppression efforts, Cal Fire reported on Tuesday.

"Active fire behavior resulted from a dry fire environment and diurnal upper elevation winds. As the expanding fire front backing to head fire through slope reversal, even small terrain changes are supporting uphill runs, group torching and short-range spotting," according to the latest report Wednesday from the NWCG.

Evacuation orders remain in place for parts of Fresno County, while road closures are in effect in parts of Fresno and Madera counties. See Cal Fire's full report for more details.

Zogg Fire

• Location: Shasta County
• Acres: 56,305
• Containment: 84 percent
• Fatalities: 4

Evacuation orders have been lifted for Rainbow Lake Road and all adjoining roadways west of Sunny Hill Road, Cal Fire reported on Tuesday.

"As residents repopulate the Zogg Fire evacuation zone, they as well as other local residents, may see an increase in free roaming livestock and wildlife including bears," Cal Fire warned Tuesday.

"Because bears lost much of their natural food sources to the Zogg Fire, they may become troublesome around residences. It is important to not to provide food to any wild animal, and not to discard any spoiled food outside where wildlife have access," Cal Fire said.

• Bobcat Fire in Los Angeles County: at least 115,796 acres; at least 89 percent contained.
• North Complex Fire in Butte, Plumas, Yuba counties: at least 318,731 acres; at least 86 percent contained.
• Red Salmon Complex Fire in Humboldt County: at least 133,763 acres; at least 34 percent contained.
• Slater Fire in Siskiyou County: at least 155,287 acres; at least 65 percent contained.
• Devil Fire in Siskiyou County: at least 8,650 acres; at least 30 percent contained
• SQF Complex Fire in Tulare County: at least 158,945 acres; at least 65 percent contained.
