A 2014 study by Pew Research Center indicated that heterosexual men who remarry choose younger wives the second time around. The research showed that 38 percent of men wed a significantly younger woman after divorcing their first wife. However, women who remarry are more likely to go for someone older, with 27 percent of women choosing a partner with a notable age difference.
A U.K. study conducted in 2017 suggested that men leaving their wives for a younger woman was responsible for a rise in divorces amongst middle-aged and older men. Between 1990 and 2012, the number of men aged 60 or over going through a divorce rose by 85 percent.
Tammy Nelson—director of the Integrative Sex Therapy Institute and a licensed sex and relationship therapist—said that older men who pursue younger women may be "losing confidence in their virility."
She told Newsweek: "[Older men might] value a woman who looks up to him, to feel respected and seen for what he can offer.
"Being with a younger, more naïve partner who has not gone through the difficult stages of child-rearing and early struggles of career-building with him can shore up his potentially flagging ego."
As for why a younger woman might choose an older man, Nelson said: "Although a bit of a trope, older men make women feel more appreciated.
"As we all strive to find our sexual strengths, we look for partners who help to align us with our needs at the time."
Shumirun isn't the only TikTok star to share their thoughts on Jessie's video. In a post liked 155,000 times, @lynda.sue said: "If you want him, come get him.
"I'd cook you something. I could make you some chicken dumplings and cobbler.
"It's good. I make my dumplings from scratch."
@Mrskariclark's version included a lot of potty talk.
"He's gassy," she said. "Farts like a mule.
"But if you want him and he'll go to you, go on and take him.
"Message me."
However, @leahforreal had a different perspective on Jessie's video. Referencing the #bi tag in the original caption, she said: "This girl is getting torn apart on my 'for your page' over the last few days.
"Go to the original video and read the original caption. She doesn't want your husband, she wants both of you."
