Senior dogs are still struggling to catch the eye of prospective owners, despite adoption rates for shelter dogs slowly increasing.
In a video posted to the TikTok page @adoptingseniordogs with over 317,000 views, a rescuer tells the story of senior bonded dogs Jack and Maisie.
She explains that she adopted the pair five years ago.
"They were 14 years old best friends, but had very little interest because of their age," reads the caption. "Then I adopted them, and it's been the best thing I've ever done. Caring for old dogs is such a beautiful experience, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat."
In the video the two dogs can be seen snuggling on the couch, enjoying woodland walks, and lots and lots of fuss.
@adoptingolddogs Jack and Maisie’s story ? 5 years ago, Jack and Maisie found themselves looking for a home. They were 14 years old best friends, but had very little interest because of their age Then I adopted them, and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done. Caring for old dogs is such a beautiful experience, and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. I lost Jack last year at the age of 18.5, and I miss him everyday. He was such a special little man and found joy in everything. Little Maisie the dachshund is 19.5 years old and lives with me in the English countryside, and keeps me busy despite her age! And I’m Jenna, a foodie creator and photographer who falls in love with dogs with cloudy eyes and grey specs in their fur. I’m so passionate about raising awareness of old dogs, and change perceptions so more find homes, like Jack and Maisie. I can’t wait to share more about them both, and what life is like with two older rescue dogs. #seniorrescuedog #adoptolddogs #olddogsoftiktok #adoptdontshop #dogstorytime #rescuedogsoftiktok

A big advantage of adopting an older dog is that you know what you're dealing with, as older dogs have clear established personalities, "which means you know what you're going to get. When you meet an older dog at a rescue centre, you'll be able to determine if their personality type, size and energy levels are the best fit for you and your household," says Purina.
How quickly a senior dog settles in to their new home depends on the dog and the circumstance.

"In some cases, senior dogs will take a little longer to settle than puppies, particularly if they used to live in a home with one dedicated owner," says Purina. "Dogs form very close attachments to their humans and will mourn the loss of their previous companion, but given time and respect, they will make space in their heart for you too.
"On the other hand, if your adopted dog used to live in a busy home with many visitors, it's likely they will adjust faster as they may not have had a strong bond to only one individual."
"Oldies are just the very best I recently lost mine miss him everyday," commented one user. "Old dogs are so underrated. I to rescued an old dog and it's so rewarding! He so appreciates everything! Wish more people did!" wrote another one.
