Commenters are praising a woman for calling her sister-in-law a "disgusting b**ch" after she made racist comments in front of family.

The anonymous woman, known only as u/strawberrythr0way, posted about the incident on Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole" forum where it received nearly 12,500 upvotes and 1,500 comments, with many calling the sister-in-law "racist." The post can be found here.

When family or friends make racist remarks, it can feel uncomfortable to call them out. But oftentimes, these remarks can open up a dialogue and give you the opportunity to explain why the comment was harmful or offensive.

Experts from Creative Equity Toolkit recommend using the conversation to educate the person about why their comment was inappropriate rather than become hostile and try to shame them, which can often lead to defensiveness.

In the post titled "AITA for calling my sister in law a disgusting witch?" the woman, 22, said she has been with her husband Dominic, 24, for six years and that they've been married for eight months.

The woman said Dominic's older sister Juliana, 26, is opinionated and not afraid to speak her mind, recalling one time she called her "Fatty Patty" while they were dress shopping.

"She also thinks my cat is ugly and so on," the post read.

In the post, she said that Juliana and her boyfriend of three years Jerry, 42, are getting married soon. Jerry has three kids from another marriage: a 15-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy, and a 5-year-old girl. She added that Jerry is white and his ex-wife is Filipino.

In the post, the woman said Juliana and her parents recently showed up at her house uninvited to discuss wedding plans.

"As she was going along, she casually says, 'I don't know how to tell Jerry I don't want his daughters in my wedding,'" the post read. "I ask what she means. She then tells me, 'Usually mixed kids are beautiful but his youngest daughter is ugly. The oldest is too fat for the type of bridesmaid dress I want. His son is at least cute enough to have in the wedding.'"

Shocked by the comment, the woman replied, "His kids clearly adore you and that's what you say about them. You are a disgusting [b**tch]!"

She said everyone fell silent and then Juliana burst into tears, calling her a "heartless fat b**ch."

She and her parents left.

The woman said Dominic reprimanded her for "disrespecting" his sister, but when she asked if he heard Juliana's comment, he "shrugged it off."

"He has been giving me the silent treatment and says we'll talk when I apologize. I left to my brother's house," the post read.

The woman's brother agreed with her, but his friends said Dominic "had a point." Her other sister-in-law said she "wasn't wrong" but also should not have "stooped to Juliana's level."

In an update posted on Sunday evening, u/strawberrythr0way wrote that she went by the house to pick up her belongings and saw that Dominic had changed the locks.

She was able to get in through the garage and gathered a few items before texting Dominic and her in-laws in a group message.

I let Dominic know we are over, I told Juliana she's a terrible insecure person, and told my [in-laws] shame on them for enabling this behavior.

Redditor Reactions

Nearly 1,500 users commented on the post, many supporting her for calling out Juliana.

"Don't have kids with this guy. He will let his evil sister bully them and tear them down," one user commented, receiving over 28,000 upvotes. "You are young, cut your losses and run. And please tell her fiancé and his ex wife what she said about his kids. They deserve to know."

"I would tell her fiance what she said and see who needs to apologize," another added.

Some also called out her husband's behavior throughout the entire situation.

"NTA. But I'm more concerned about your husband giving you the silent treatment over this," one user commented. "It sounds like he's trying to excuse what she said. Maybe he doesn't want to acknowledge that his sister is mean?"

Just making sure I read this right...You had a candid response to some plainly disgusting racism and you are asking if YOU are the AH. Definitely not.
