The internet has slammed a woman who asked her boyfriend to start paying her rent for her after just two months together.

On Wednesday in a viral post on popular discussion site Mumsnet, user gfwantsmoney shared the story, which now has over 200 replies.

The man explained: "I have been seeing this woman for a couple of months. We have been seeing each other every couple of weeks since January and everything is fantastic. We talk almost every day. She is beautiful, interesting and I really like her. I could see a future for us after being single for a long time."

However, an issue had recently cropped up between the couple. The man wrote: "The only problem is that she just told me she needs £500 a month to pay her rent each month. She is not from the U.K. so she said in her country it is normal for a boyfriend to pay for things for his girlfriend.

"Is she taking me for a ride? I can afford the £500."

Mumsnet users slammed the woman for expecting her new boyfriend to pay her rent. One user said: "Why should you give her any money? I'm not following this. I would suggest she gets a job," while another wrote: "You seriously need to ask? Of course she's taking you for a ride."

In December 2021, personal finance experts The Balance surveyed 1,000 Americans aged 18–40 who were currently dating about their experiences. The survey found that among millennials (ages 25–40), 28 percent were willing to spend at least $100 on a first date, with a third spending $250 or more.

Meanwhile, roughly a fifth of respondents said that how much their date spends impacts the likelihood of going out with them again.

Another survey from 2021 by financial advice service The Ascent found that financial milestones came a little faster than you may expect in new relationships. On average, two months into a relationship respondents said they had lent their partner their credit cards for the first time—four months before most couples reported saying "I love you".

One Mumsnet user urged the man not to offer the woman money and said: "Please don't. She's found a rich man and is trying to exploit him. Don't be part of it. Say 'sorry but no', if she wants to see you despite that... It's real."

In a later update, the poster shared that he had messaged the woman to tell her he would not pay her rent. He later updated: "For those interested, she didn't reply at all. She used to reply immediately."

"Nothing lost," he said: "I had a good time. She had some good wine and nights out. I had a few nice dates with a nice lady. I will leave it like that. Next time, I will ask Mumsnet after the first date."

Last week, the internet was shocked by a man who ruined his girlfriend's birthday to prioritize his ex.
