A young woman is fighting for her life after being shot in the face in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday night.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 7000 block of Welland Road at around 9 p.m., a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told Newsweek.

On arrival, the officers located a woman who had sustained two gunshot wounds to her face, the spokesperson said.

They rendered medical aid to the woman until a crew from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived and transported her to a local hospital.

She is in a life-threatening but stable condition, the spokesperson said.

The victim's name was not released by the sheriff's office, but she was described as a Black woman in her early 20s.

The sheriff's office said it does not have a description of the suspect. Investigators do not believe the incident was a case of domestic violence, the spokesperson said.

"We do have witnesses and are collecting evidence from the scene," the spokesperson said. "Detectives are also actively investigating the scene at this time."

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, the sheriff's office said. No further details were immediately released.

The shooting is the latest in a long line of incidents of young people being shot in the U.S. as an epidemic of gun violence continues to claim lives across the country.

On Saturday night, authorities said a 16-year-old girl's birthday party had "turned deadly" in Harris County, Texas.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said an altercation took place in the parking lot outside a production studio where "multiple suspects began shooting at each other" and numerous shots were fired.

Gonzalez said a 17-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he died. Two other 17-year-olds were also transported to the hospital—one of them in a critical condition—along with a 14-year-old who sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

In another incident that also took place on Saturday night, gunmen opened fire on a crowd at an event that was promoting non-violence in Dumas, Arkansas. Police said one person was killed and at least two dozen more were injured, including some children.

More than 9,300 people in the U.S. have been killed in shootings so far in 2022, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, with more than 7,200 people injured.

Anyone who has information about Sunday's shooting in Jacksonville is urged to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
