Everything We Know About Zac Efron's Condition After Hospitalization For Bacterial Infection in Australia

Zac Efron is back in the United States and feeling a lot better after falling ill in Papua New Guinea. The actor confirmed he had "bounced back" following his sickness and was spending time with his loved ones for the holidays in an Instagram post shared on Sunday.

"Very thankful to everyone who has reached out. I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks in P. N. G.," Efron, 32, wrote. "I'm home for the holidays with my friends and family. Thanks for all the love and concern, see you in 2020!"

Efron was reportedly treated for a bacterial infection at a hospital in Australia, according to a Sunday Telegraph report. Glenn McKay, a doctor with the Medical Rescue Group which transported the actor from Papua New Guinea to Australia via plane, told the paper he "couldn't discuss any confidential patient information." However, McKay did confirm the medical rescue service airlifted "a US citizen in his 30s from PNG to Brisbane recently for medical attention in Australia."

"He was admitted to St Andrews War Memorial Hospital in stable condition," McKay said.

Doctors did not confirm the type of bacteria infection Efron was treated for.

The Australian newspaper reported Efron requested to return home for the holidays and doctors deemed his condition stable enough to allow him to leave. Efron was permitted to fly home to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve.

Efron was in Papua New Guinea filming a new survival-style reality television show, Killing Zac Efron, in which he travels "deep into the jungles of a remote, dangerous island to carve his own name in expedition history," according to the show's synopsis. Efron explored the region with nothing but basic gear and a guide for 21 days.

Before his illness, the High School Musical star shared photos of his journey on social media, including pictures canoeing down the Sepik River and visiting Yanchan Village to witness a traditional skin-cutting ceremony.

The series—first announced back in November—is scheduled to premiere during the launch of the new streaming service Quibi in April. Efron, who is an executive producer of the show, was excited about the new adventure.

"I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level," Efron said in a statement announcing the show. "I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits."
