After winning the Georgia, Mississippi and Washington primaries on Tuesday, President Joe Biden has clinched the Democratic presidential nomination and his rival former President Donald Trump secured the Republican nod a few hours later.
As of 9:30 p.m., Biden had garnered 2,015 delegates, surpassing the required threshold of 1,968 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination, according to Associated Press (AP) results Tuesday night.
After AP called Washington's primary for Trump at 11 p.m., the former president reached the 1,215 delegates required to lock in the GOP nomination.
The Context
A rematch between Biden and Trump in the general election has been confirmed after both candidates amassed the required delegates on Tuesday. The MAGA leader had long been expected to land the GOP nomination, especially following former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley's exit from the GOP race last week, which left Trump without opponents.
While campaigning for a second term, Biden has faced a growing effort by progressives to sway voters to withhold their support and vote "uncommitted" as an act of protest over his administration's support of Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.
Despite the "uncommitted" effort and facing two long-shot challengers for the party's nomination, Biden has easily won every Democratic primary election of the 2024 presidential race except in the U.S. territory of American Samoa, where he lost.
Newsweek reached out via email on Tuesday to Biden and Trump representatives for comment.
