Joe Biden's 'Uncommitted' Problem Is Getting Worse

President Joe Biden faced a growing effort by progressives to sway voters to withhold their support and vote "uncommitted" as 15 states and one U.S. territory held their Democratic primary elections on Super Tuesday.

Biden had been easily winning every Democratic primary election of the 2024 presidential race, despite this mounting push and being challenged for the party's nomination by author Marianne Williamson and Representative Dean Phillips from Minnesota. He continued his win streak on March 5, but thousands of voters cast their ballots in protest of the president.

While the specific ballot language for the "uncommitted" vote varies, eight of the 15 states holding Democratic primaries on Super Tuesday had an option to not support Biden or his long-shot rivals.

Newsweek reached out via email on Tuesday night to Biden's representatives for comment.

Last week, Biden faced some uncertainty in Michigan, a swing state that he narrowly won in 2020 and that now shows increasing discontent among its significant Muslim population over his administration's support of Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza. More than 100,000 Michigan primary voters cast ballots for "uncommitted" in protest.

The momentum of the "uncommitted" movement spread to ballots in Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee and Vermont.
