A young boy was left ruing the decision to take a bite out of a chile after the resulting level of spiciness left him in tears and calling for police help.

The child's father, who goes by the online name of LokoReek, shared before and after footage of his son to TikTok. According to the account's bio, they are based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

At the time of writing, the footage had been viewed 7 million times online, with reactions ranging from amusement to mild concern for the child involved.

When it comes to introducing children to spicy food, the official advice is to go slow.

"Start with a small amount of spice and serve with foods your child already enjoys," registered dietician Johna Burdeos told Huffington Post. "Increase the spiciness gradually, as your child's tolerance evolves."

It's unclear whether the boy in the video is experienced in consuming spicy food but, as the clip shows, he initially had no qualms about taking a massive bite out of a large green chile. The video can be watched here.

That confidence soon gives way to despair though, with the child shown attempting to cool his mouth by consuming a large cup of water.

Big mistake. As Katie McCallum from Houston Methodist Hospital explains: "Drinking water will basically just spread this molecule [the chile] around your mouth—setting off even more of your pain receptors."

They instead recommend drinking dairy milk, which contains a protein called casein that is capable of breaking down the oil-based spice molecules, known as capsaicin, from inside the mouth.

"Think of casein as a detergent," McCallum explained. "Attracting, surrounding and helping wash away the oil-based capsaicin molecules floating around your mouth, similar to how soap washes away grease.

Unfortunately, for this boy no relief was forthcoming.

"I didn't know it was that hot," he tells his dad before breaking down in tears and telling him "someone call 911."

According to the dad, his son had begun drinking milk at this point to try and ease his pain. Despite his son's tears he is also insistent he is "good" now and "ready for the next challenge."

The video left many on social media suitably amused. Lolovictoriaa thought the boy's reaction was "funny as hell" with kaylannnn1 in agreement that it was hilarious, writing: "He went through every emotion."

Shiloh Anjelyse said: "The transition to him drinking water has me crying" while ShiaJ said the footage had her "on the floor."

Some expressed sympathy for the boy's plight, with cnsass commenting: "Aww poor baby." Leitnum, meanwhile, commented "poor darling" though admitted he had them "laughing" when he asked his dad to call 911.

User82727272818817262713 wrote "I felt bad until that one bit and started crying" with Danii_Kiids admitting they didn't know whether to "cry or laugh."

Newsweek has contacted LokoReek for comment.
