The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers are headed to this year's Super Bowl, a rematch that is generating a theory that political history could repeat itself.
On Sunday, the Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC title and the 49ers declared an NFC victory over the Detroit Lions, setting up a Chiefs-49ers showdown at the Super Bowl LVIII on February 11.
Shortly after the matchup was announced, social media users started pointing out that the last time the two teams faced off was during a presidential election year. In 2020, the Chiefs beat the Niners 31-20 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, giving Kansas City its first Super Bowl win since 1970.
Nine months later, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the presidential election. Now, Biden and Trump are again poised to become the Democratic and GOP presidential nominees. So while both are still battling primary challengers, the 2024 race will likely be a second round of Biden vs. Trump.

Noting that the last time both the Chiefs and Biden won, Democratic congressional staffer Sam Jeske wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "I guess we're rooting for the Chiefs, folks."
Trump supporters, on the other hand, suggested that a win for San Francisco could mean a second Trump term—or that both the Super Bowl and the presidential election are rigged.
"49ers are going to the Superbowl! 2024 is the redemption year!!" one Trump fan tweeted. "2020 was Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers, the 49ers lost and then Covid happened and President Trump lost his re-election. This is the year we can take it all the way back!! 49ers Win and President Trump wins 2024!"
"49ers vs Chiefs is like Biden vs Trump. America loses," another said.
Others pointed out that the repeat of both contests is merely a coincidence, and some acknowledged that neither the Super Bowl nor the election results have yet to be determined. So the 2020 winners could still lose, the 2020 losers could still win, or there could be one repeat victory and a new winner in the other.
"If i had a nickel for every time the super bowl matchup was 49ers/Chiefs in a year where the US presidential election was between Biden/Trump i'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice," one user tweeted.
"Will this year end up with different outcomes in both? Either? Neither?" radio host Pete Mundo wrote.
Some social media users also poked fun at the two rematches, saying that the repeats could mean the reoccurrence of other 2020 events, like the COVID pandemic.
"Biden Vs. Trump; Chiefs Vs. 49ers; we getting another pandemic this year, ain't we?" former Oklahoma House candidate Gregory Hardin tweeted.
"Ready for that 3rd factor that comes after the Super Bowl to take me out," another user joked.
"Covid preparing to make the greatest comeback of all time after Chiefs vs 49ers superbowl is confirmed," a third wrote.

Others joked that superstar Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, helped propel her boyfriend's team to the Super Bowl.
"2020: chiefs won, biden won. i know this is what they mean when they said she can swing an election, right?" one user tweeted.
In two weeks, the Chiefs and 49ers will play the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Usher is slated to headline the halftime show.
It will be the sixth Super Bowl for Kansas City, including its fourth in the past five seasons, and the eighth for San Francisco, which has not won the Super Bowl since 1994.
