A California man has been arrested for a crime he's accused of committing in 1994.
Sharron Eugene Gadlin has been charged in the death of Cheri Huss 28 years after the case went cold. She was found stabbed to death with a bite mark on her body. The Riverside County Regional Cold Case Team took up the case and ran forensic testing on the bite mark, with the DNA leading to Gadlin.
"I hope Cheri and her family will finally get the justice they deserve and have waited so long for," Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a statement. "Our cold case team of investigators will continue to use cutting edge technology to solve old murder cases across Riverside County. Our prosecutors will continue to vigorously prosecute these murderers until we get justice for their victims."
Huss was a mother of three who had recently divorced her husband, who was cleared of suspicion in the case after it was proved that their 8-, 13- and 14-year-old children were staying at his residence the night of her death. Neither her former husband nor her children have released statements on Gadlin's arrest.
According to The Desert Sun, after investigators were able to match Gadlin's DNA to the scene of the crime, they discovered that he had lived about 12 miles from Huss' apartment in 1994. While the relationship between Gadlin and Huss is unclear, her mother, Ruth Friedman, said in 1998 that Huss had seen someone taking photographs of her through a window.
"She sounded desperate," Friedman said. "She told us someone had been taking photos of her and hanging up when she answered the phone. It was terrifying."
Gadlin is being held in the Robert Presley Detention Center on a $1 million bond. He has been charged with first-degree murder, trespassing and public intoxication.
Newsweek reached out to the detention center for comment.
Less than an hour away in Orange County, another high-profile death case is being highlighted in a Netflix true-crime miniseries. Worst Roommate Ever features Kwang Chol "KC" Joy, who killed his roommate, Maribel Ramos, in 2014.
