Herschel Walker could be about to embark on a successful political career with his run to be the next Georgia senator, but how successful was his NFL career?

The former Heisman Trophy winner was once touted as one of the best athletes in America and went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. A notable NFL player in the '80s and '90s, Walker also spent time as one of the best players in the short-lived United States Football League.

After playing for the University of Georgia for three years, and leaving early before graduating, Walker joined the New Jersey Generals, which were part of the USFL, in 1983. He played three seasons for them before making the leap to the NFL with the Cowboys in 1986.

USFL Records

The USFL lasted for only three seasons from 1983 to 1985, and the signing of Walker was seen as a real coup at the time.

Since the league only lasted for a short time, it was comparatively easy for Walker to snag its records, as opposed to the NFL's. Walker holds the USFL record for all-time rushing attempts (1,143), rushing yards (5,562) and rushing touchdowns (54).

His success led to him being named MVP in 1985, the league's final season.

NFL Records

Walker has no standing NFL records to his name. He was known as a great player during his time in the National Football League, achieving some impressive statistics, but none that will go down in history.

While he may not have made history on the field, he did behind the scenes after being the primary player and namesake of the largest trade in NFL history. "The Herschel Walker Trade" saw the running back move from Dallas to Minnesota in 1989, with the final result involving 18 players in trades and future draft picks. The trade has been the subject of documentaries and scathing columns in the preceding years, as it was a major factor in the Cowboys' success in the '90s; the Vikings, however, never reached the playoffs when Walker played there and have not reached the Super Bowl since.

Walker was the Cowboys' leading receiver in 1986 and 1987 and the team's leading rusher in 1987 and 1988.

He registered in NFL career highs of 1,514 rushing yards and 505 receiving yards in the 1988 season. The all-time record for rushing yards is 2,105 by Eric Dickerson in 1984, and the record for receiving yards is 1,964 by Calvin Johnson in 2012.

Walker enjoyed a successful and lucrative career in the NFL but he doesn't hold any all-time records.
