'Enola Holmes 2' Cast: Who Plays Professor Moriarty and Dr John Watson?

What would Sherlock Holmes be without his trusty sidekick Dr John Watson and his archnemesis, Professor Moriarty?

Both Watson and Moriarty are just as iconic as the sleuth himself in Arthur Conan Doyle's work, so it should come as no surprise that they are introduced in Enola Holmes 2.

The Netflix film focuses on Millie Bobby Brown's Enola, who takes on a new case to help find a missing girl, Sarah Chapman, on behalf of her worried sister. In the meantime, Enola's brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) is being troubled by his own investigation.

Professor Moriarty is known the world over as the nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, his equal in brains and a criminal who takes pleasure in trying to one-up the detective until their fateful encounter at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland.

Countless actors have taken on the villainous role, with recent iterations including Andrew Scott in Sherlock, Jared Harris in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movies, and Natalie Dormer in Elementary.

Now, in Enola Holmes 2, the character is back, though Moriarty's machinations are revealed only partway through the film, once Sherlock solves a cipher and realizes the character is behind both his and Enola's cases.

Moriarty, it turns out, appears in the film much earlier than this, though, because the character is in disguise as Miss Mira Troy.

Mira Troy, for the eagle-eyed among you, is an anagram of Moriarty, so the character was using her cleverness and wit to hide in plain sight. But Sherlock was able to deduce the truth, and Moriarty is taken away for her part in blackmailing the owner of a matchstick factory.

The character is portrayed by Sharon Duncan-Brewster, 46, in the film, and should the film have a follow-up, the British actor is likely to play Moriarty again as the drama reveals that the villain was able to escape her confines and go on the run.

Duncan-Brewster has appeared in films like Dune, where she played Liet-Kynes, or Dr. Kynes, and Netflix shows such as Top Boy and Sex Education.

This brings us to Sherlock Holmes' trusted sidekick, Dr John Watson. Now, given the first Enola Holmes film was all about establishing Enola Holmes as a detective in her own right, viewers didn't get to peek much into the life of Cavill's Sherlock.

Enola Holmes 2 changes that by making Sherlock a main part of the story, with Enola even visiting him in his rooms at 221B Baker Street where he plays the violin and smokes his pipe, but is very much alone.

During the course of the movie, Enola mentions how Sherlock could do with a roommate, essentially indicating, with a wink and a nudge to the audience, that Watson will indeed make an appearance.

The character does show up, but not until the film's post-credit scene, when he arrives at 221B after reading about an ad for a roommate written by Enola on Sherlock's behalf.

Watson is played by Himesh Patel, 32, who had his career breakthrough with Danny Boyle's film Yesterday, in which the world forgot about The Beatles with the exception of Patel's Jack.

The actor has also appeared in shows like Avenue 5, The Luminaries and Station Eleven. His role in Enola Holmes 2 was kept a secret, and Patel wasn't listed as a member of the cast on IMDb before the film's release.

Enola Holmes 2 is out now on Netflix.
