'Euphoria Fans Make Hit HBO Series 'Most-Tweeted of the Decade'

Twitter has announced that the HBO original drama series, Euphoria, is the most-tweeted-about TV show this decade.

The series, produced by rapper Drake, follows Rue (Zendaya) and her struggles of overcoming severe drug addiction. Most episodes are narrated by Rue as she explains the backstories of her friends at East Highland High School and their ups and downs with friendship and relationships. The show also stars Sydney Sweeney, Barbie Ferreira, Hunter Schafer, Angus Cloud, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, and Jacob Elordi.

The drama began in the summer of 2019 running for eight episodes. The show returned briefly for two episodes airing in December of 2020 and January of 2021. The specials go more into detail on the relationship between Rue and Jules (Hunter Schafer) and the aftermath of the season 1 finale.

The long-awaited return of the popular series premiered the first episode of season 2 at the beginning of January. Each episode has gotten millions of viewers tuning in each week. Many fans, that have a Twitter account, have tweeted about the series, causing its rising popularity which led to Euphoria being the most tweeted about series in this decade. The hit show was also recently renewed for season 3. After eight weeks, the season finale is set to air this Sunday.

"From hilarious memes, to plot predictions and fashion inspiration, Euphoria has dominated Twitter this season, The show has built a strong community of dedicated fans who not only root for their favorite characters and scenes, but also openly voice their frustrations and fears, especially as it relates to the fate of characters," Jenna Ross, who is in charge of TV partnerships at Twitter, said.

They also revealed that the three most-tweeted-about characters in the series are Rue, Fezco (Angus Cloud), and Nate (Jacob Elordi). An estimated 30 million tweets have been posted about the show within the eight weeks it's been airing via Variety.

With viewership being up 51 percent this season, Twitter users have started memes based on scenes or quotes from the series. Popular scenes that have turned into memes include Maddy (Alexa Demie) pounding on a bathroom door of a New Year's Eve party, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) hiding in a bathtub, and Maddy saying "B***h, you better be joking."

Many photos from behind the scenes or the actors have been shared via Twitter and get tens of thousands of likes while some have over 100,000 likes.

Fans on Twitter always keep the conversation going.

"Euphoria really is a good show. I love how each episode it leaves you wanting to know what's going to happen next," @tierienyy wrote.

@BubbleszLaReina tweeted, "I really respect Euphoria because it really shows a good outlook of different forms of mental illness and what happens when people don't heal or keep ignoring triggers. it shows how much people don't realize they are harming those around them without meaning to."

Euphoria episodes 1 through 7 are now streaming on HBO Max.
