A pregnant woman was backed online after expressing concern over the father's marijuana use on the day she gives birth.

The woman shared in a post on Reddit with more than 6,000 upvotes that she was planning on refusing her boyfriend a ride to the hospital with her if he smelled of cannabis after work.

Research shows that becoming parents can heavily impact the relationship between a couple, with 70 percent of couples experiencing "precipitous" drops in the quality of their relationship following the birth of a child.

For most, arguments focus on time spent together, sleep schedules and money, but this couple's spat managed to strike a nerve with many and even left some concerned about their future.

"I told my boyfriend this morning that if he comes back from work smelling like 'special plants' he has to go home and take a shower before he comes to the hospital," wrote the mom in the post.

The boyfriend works in a tattoo shop, where they regularly take smoking breaks out back when the shop is not busy.

The couple live separately, and his home is half an hour further away from the hospital than hers, so the boyfriend said he would simply spray himself with cologne to cover it up.

"I told him that wouldn't work. I know when he does that because he smells like a dumpster plus a whole bottle of cheap cologne and it makes me feel like throwing up," the Redditor wrote.

Instead, the boyfriend said that his cologne plan would work, along with a shower in the morning.

"Would I be the a****** if he shows up stinky and I tell him he has to go take a shower before he comes to the hospital? He won't miss anything besides check in," wrote the expecting girlfriend.

"Weed is illegal where we live and i'm not playing around with my baby getting anywhere near taken from me because he can't abstain for one or two days," she added.

Reddit users voiced identical concerns, predicting what hospital workers may do in that situation. "Depending on where you live, you might not even be able to take your child home if social services are called," wrote one user.

"If a hospital smells drugs on the dad of a newborn they're probably doing a safeguarding referral to social services," wrote another Redditor. "He should either skip work, leave early so he has time to get washed/ changed or if those aren't options then he should be late for whatever time he is meant to be there so at least he doesn't stink of weed."

Another wrote: "How stupid is he to think that showing up for the birth of his child reeking of weed is a good plan? My son smokes. Cologne doesn't hide the smell of weed. It just makes you smell like weed and cologne."

In an update, the woman confirmed that her boyfriend went home and showered before attending the hospital. "I told him I'd make sure he never saw the baby if social services got involved," she wrote.
