Aparna Shewakramani has become a breakout star of Indian Matchmaking on Netflix, with viewers divided on whether they love her strong views about what kind of man she wants or hate her for rejecting any man who has a sense of humor, likes holidays or does not know that Bolivia has salt flats.

This has led to her becoming one of the most memed stars of Indian Matchmaking, with her hatred of podcasts and comedy, in general, striking a chord with viewers all over the world.

Unsurprisingly for a woman who says in Indian Matchmaking, "you know how I hate comedy," Aparna has not seen the funny side of becoming a meme. She told OprahMag.com: "A lot of people seem to just hear the sound bites. I forgot that there's viewers out there that operate on that surface level.

"And so, I'm just kind of ignoring that part of it and I don't have time for that. I don't think anyone should really enable that in any way. I definitely said those things. It's definitely a part of me, but again, they're sound bites."

Despite some having criticized her, she revealed that she thinks it is important that we see Asian women with strong opinions on screen.

She said: "Some people are insightful, and have reached out to me about how they appreciate that I'm willing to share my opinions and speak my truth about what I want.

"They've said that they haven't heard a lot of South Asian women do that—not only in their lives but especially on larger platforms like this. If I can do that for one person, that negates a hundred people that are being negative or judgmental about a very edited show, which makes no sense to me."

Though she may personally hate comedy, it was her own sense of humor that got her cast on the show. Indian Matchmaking creator Smriti Mundhra said of Aparna in an LA Times interview: "We picked her because she is hilarious...We South Asian women are expected to diminish ourselves and conform to what we think is going to be attractive to partners. But Aparna knows who she is, she knows what she wants, and she is not afraid to speak her mind."

In the same piece, Aparna revealed that she had not yet found the man she wants to visit that 41st country with. Speaking of her dates, she said: "They were all wonderful people. They just weren't the one for me."

She added in her OprahMag interview: "I still talk to the guys who were matches from the show, actually—Dilip, Jay and Shekar. We're good friends. To walk away with three people you can relate to—who are good, and kind, and grounded—is a success in my book."

Indian Matchmaking is streaming now on Netflix.
