Internet Torn Over Sydney Sweeney's Response to Family's MAGA-Like Hats

Sydney Sweeney has divided opinions with a statement responding to a backlash regarding her family apparently wearing "MAGA"-type hats at a party.

On Saturday, the Euphoria star posted a series of pictures and videos from her mom's 60th birthday party, which was a surprise hoedown.

A number of people on the internet claimed to see guests at the party wearing "Blue Lives Matter" shirts and red MAGA hats, both of which are associated with far-right politics.

After the backlash began in her Instagram comment sections, and over on Twitter, Sweeney responded with a tweet of her own.

"You guys this is wild," she wrote a few hours after the Instagram post.

"An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions."

She then wished love to everyone, and gave her mom another happy birthday.

Sweeney's response to the backlash didn't sit well with many Twitter users, as some provided other images that items of clothing at the party could easily have been construed as a "political statement."

New York Times bestselling author Frederick Joseph took issue with Sweeney's response and shared two more images suggesting that people were wearing politically-charged clothing.

"Assumptions?" Joseph questioned, "Don't gaslight your fans (many are likely young progressive people based on the content of the show that gave you fame). Your family is obviously far-right based on the blue lives matter shirts and MAGA babies."

He attached extra pictures of Sweeney's party, and another of Sydney's family member Trent Sweeney who in a separate post had a MAGA hat on a baby outside the White House.

Another writer, Tara Dublin also provided more picture "evidence" as a group shot featured a girl stood nearby with a red cap on. "Sydney Sweeney is a very talented actor, but she can't convince me that the girl on the left in this photo is not wearing a MAGA hat," she wrote.

Shaunna Murphy, a member of the PR team at A+E Networks, had some stern words for the Emmy-nominated actress too.

"Your fans being hurt that you posted photos of you with your dad in a blue lives matter shirt at a maga themed birthday party isn't unreasonable, girlie."

While many pointed to the MAGA-style hats, Twitter user @YrOnlyHope found images that revealed the messages on the hats read, "Make Sixty Great Again," as it was Sweeney's mom's 60th birthday.

An unverified Instagram account seemingly belonging to Sydney's brother Trent features the hats, and he clarified that the "hates say 'Make Sixty Great Again' btw." Sydney Sweeney liked the post.

Former poker player and British model Live Boeree stuck up for Sweeney in her comment section. "Whatever you do, never ever ever submit to pressure apologize to the online mob, *especially* when you have done nothing wrong. Stay strong," she wrote.

Self-proclaimed Christian conservative Carmine Sabia also told Sweeney she doesn't need to say sorry to anyone. "But what if you and your family do support former President Donald Trump? You do not owe an apology. And if you do not support him that is fine too. Not everything is politics. Happy BDay to your mom. God Bless."

Author Stefanie Iris Weiss advised Sweeney to do what she has done, and cut out members of her family who have different political beliefs to her.

Sydney is nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards this year, for her work in both Euphoria and The White Lotus.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 12, 2022.
