James Comer has been mocked by Democrats on social media after sending a fundraising email to supporters asking for donations.

Comer, a Kentucky Republican, is the chairman of the House Oversight Committee involved in an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

On December 13, the House of Representatives voted to launch the inquiry into the president by 221 votes to 212, following allegations from Republicans that they had evidence of the president's knowledge of and role in his family members' domestic and foreign business dealings while he served as vice president under Barack Obama. The allegations have been denied by the White House and Hunter Biden's lawyers, with Democrats criticizing the GOP's impeachment inquiries for failing to find any meaningful evidence against the president. The White House has also described the GOP's impeachment effort as "sad, pathetic, and a waste of everyone's time."

Amid this, in an email sent to supporters, which Newsweek has not seen in full, Comer said his fundraising efforts had "hit a brick wall."

The email said: "We've hit a major problem. Our January fundraising has hit a brick wall."

Newsweek contacted a representative for Comer by email to comment on this story.

On X, formerly Twitter, California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell took a screenshot of the email and wrote: "No s***. How pathetic is this guy? His Biden investigation has collapsed and now he's coming to me for money! Sorry, Comer Pyle!"

Florida Democrat Rep. Jared Moskowitz wrote in response: "Now Eric, I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation, like Comer is probably just raising money to help pay for Trumps Legal fees. [Trump's lawyer] Alina Habba looks expensive."

Other X users also mocked the Republican. One wrote: "Well...the Republicans said they wanted to build a wall."

Another account called Really American, which has almost 670,000 followers, said: "Instead of trying to raise money, Comer should be giving that poorly-spent taxpayer money back to taxpayers."

It comes as the Republicans called in witnesses for depositions as part of the inquiry in January. But all of these witnesses said that they knew of no corruption on Biden's part.

Eric Schwerin, who worked with Hunter Biden in business, told lawmakers on Tuesday that he was not aware of Joe Biden benefiting financially from his son's work.

"Given my awareness of his finances and the explicit directions he gave to his financial advisers, the allegation that he would engage in any improper conduct to benefit himself or his family is preposterous to me," Schwerin said in an opening statement obtained by Huffington Post but not seen by Newsweek.

Following this hearing, Comer spoke with Fox News' Sean Hannity and complained that his panel keeps hearing from witnesses who have "had a hard time remembering the bad things."
