Jimmy Kimmel Live is airing throughout the summer, but Kimmel himself is taking a break from his ABC late night show.

The ABC show has been hosted by a series of guest hosts who have so far included Sean Hayes, Chelsea Handler, Anthony Anderson, Mark Rober, Dana Carvey, Kerry Washington and RuPaul.

The guest host line-up is set to continue, with Simu Liu, Jeff Goldblum and Nicole Byer among the hosts still to come.

But don't worry, Jimmy Kimmel fans: the host will be back.

Here's where he is, and when he is expected to return to his ABC show.

Why Is Jimmy Kimmel Not On Jimmy Kimmel Live?

Jimmy Kimmel is currently on summer hiatus from his show. ABC

Last time Kimmel was replaced by guest hosts, it was because he had tested positive for COVID-19. This time, The host is doing what many late night hosts do: taking a summer vacation.

He is far from alone in this. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been taking a break since June 26, with the show not set to return until July 24. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert took two weeks off earlier in July, as did The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Kimmel's break, however, is slightly longer. The reason for this is that a summer break was part of the three-year contract the host signed in 2019 to keep his show on ABC (according to Last Night On).

The host said at the time of his first hiatus in June 2020: "There's nothing wrong, I'm healthy, my family's healthy, I just need a couple of months off."

When Is Jimmy Kimmel Coming Back?

No exact return date has been confirmed, but Variety reports Kimmel will be back in the fall. In 2021, Kimmel returned from his summer vacation on September 7.

Among the things viewers have to look forward to is the show's return to the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House for the first time since 2019.

However, the above-mentioned contract Kimmel signed in 2019 expires at the end of 2022, leaving the future of the show up in the air.

Asked about this by Variety, Kimmel said: "Eventually, I am going to have to stop doing this. I'm not going to do this forever. I would not be honest at all if I said that I have decided one way or the other. I'm thinking about it a lot, though."

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET / 10:35 p.m. CT on ABC.
