Conservative rapper Jimmy Levy has said that his backpack started "exploding" on a plane before takeoff, adding that it was a "spiritual attack."
Levy rose to popularity over his song "Boycott Target." He created the hit with fellow Pro-Trump rapper Forgiato Blow in response to the retailer's 2023 Pride Month merchandise and transgender-friendly clothing collection. In June, the song hit the top spot on Billboard's rap digital song sales chart, despite Levy saying it was being censored online.
Levy celebrated his No.1 with a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing: "We got a #1 Rap Billboard! Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen by getting the song on iTunes! Glory to God for giving us a voice!"
On Tuesday, Levy told his 1 million followers on Instagram that his backpack caught on fire while he was seated on a plane in a New York airport. "Just faced one of scariest moments of my life," he wrote alongside a video of flight attendants dumping bottles of water onto a red backpack.
"Right after falling asleep pre-takeoff on my flight back home to South Florida from New York, I was jolted awake by a sudden and terrifying wave of heat, seemingly shooting towards my face," he added. "I immediately opened my eyes and noticed my backpack, which was initially tucked underneath my seat, now in a exploding and floating ball of fire."
Levy wrote: "Acting quickly, I pushed it to the ground and began stomping on it frantically to prevent the blaze from spreading. With the help of the flight staff and water, the fire was contained. However, due to the gravity of the situation, everyone was required to evacuate the plane for a thorough investigation."
The rapper added that the explosion was "a spiritual attack from the pits of hell and I rebuke it in then name of Jesus!"
Levy said that he received a few burns on his hands but was otherwise fine. "I thank God for my life and the safety of my family and everyone else on that flight!" he added. "This will only make my faith stronger. No weapon formed against anyone reading this shall prosper in Jesus name!"
Newsweek reached out to Levy via Instagram direct message for his comment, as well as The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which operates and manages JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports via email for comment.
