A man has been praised for supporting his mother's response to a cruel mistress jibe even though it upset his fiancee.
In a viral post shared on Reddit's Am I The A**hole page, which can be seen here, user StockOne1667 explained his father had an affair with a woman about 15 years younger than him and left his wife for her.
According to the Institute for Family Studies, men are more likely to cheat when compared to women. It found that 20 percent of men and 13 percent of women reported having had sex with someone other than their spouse while they were married.
The Reddit user explained his mother never said anything bad about her husband, even when he recently married his mistress.

In the post, StockOne1667 said he had also recently proposed to his partner and they had an engagement party to celebrate.
The Reddit user further explained his future mother-in-law and her friends hate his father and suspected it was because they worried about their husbands getting ideas.
He continued: "MIL [mother-in-law] made a snarky comment about how when men leave for a younger woman isn't she supposed to be prettier and my dad might have done it wrong because my mom is much more attractive. All of her friends laughed and my dad's wife looked like she was dying inside.
"My mom told my MIL to stop and she doesn't like women who pit women against each other and said his wife is beautiful. When we walked away, I told my mom that was very gracious and I was proud of her.
"I wasn't even talking to my fiancee but she lost it. She said I was gross for praising my mom for being gracious when she should be being a 'petty b**ch.' She said I was an affair apologist and it made her nervous and that I should have been laughing at her mom's comment.
"My mom called my fiancee an idiot and walked away. My fiancee is still upset I used that word and keeps saying it was sexist and 1950s, but I can't really explain."
The post has attracted some 5,400 upvotes and more than 1,100 comments since it was shared Sunday.
An overwhelming majority of those who commented on the post praised the mother's handling of the situation while also slamming the fiancee's reaction.
One Reddit user, whose comment was upvoted more than 11,100 times, said: "Your mom is the wronged party so everyone should take her lead.
"The fact that your partner thinks public humiliation when it's someone else's event is OK is a red flag. You should be worried she'll put petty bs on you. NTA [not the a**hole]."
Another added: "OP's [original poster's] mom is acting like a mature adult despite what went down with her ex. MIL, her friends and OP'S fiancee are acting like immature schoolyard mean girls. Bullying is still wrong even if said bully feels they have a reason to do so."
A third posted: "Your mom has class. I love your mom. The way she handled it is beautiful because she knows she doesn't have enough time and energy for this s**t."
