A Florida man was arrested on Thursday after allegedly running over his girlfriend and the woman's two daughters, according to deputies.

In a press release, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said that the alleged incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at a gas station in DeLand, Florida.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Nicholas Shaw, 29, was driving back to his residence in Stuart, Florida, accompanied by his girlfriend, her two daughters and her infant son. During their trip home, the group stopped at a BP gas station in DeLand.

"The children's 30-year-old mother told Volusia sheriff's deputies she and Shaw had been arguing while traveling and the argument continued at the gas station," the sheriff's office said in the press release.

While at the gas station, the 30-year-old mother, who was not identified by deputies, was holding her 3-year-old daughter in her arms. The mother's 10-year-old daughter was standing next to her, deputies said.

As Shaw and his girlfriend were allegedly arguing at the gas station, the mother reportedly attempted to take her infant son from the couple's gold Concord LX vehicle. While she was trying to take her infant son out of the car, Shaw allegedly yelled at her, "You're not going to take my son," the sheriff's office said in the press release.

The press release said Shaw was reportedly aware that his girlfriend and her two children were in the path of his vehicle, but proceeded to shift the car into reverse and hit the gas pedal, allegedly "striking all three victims with the back passenger door, knocking them to the ground."

According to the sheriff's office, after allegedly knocking the woman and the two girls to the ground, Shaw reportedly continued to accelerate the vehicle and allegedly ran the 3-year-old daughter over with the vehicle's tire. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said that after allegedly striking the woman and her daughters he fled the scene with the woman's infant son in the car, but returned shortly after.

"The girls each sustained scrapes and possible spinal injuries and were transported by EVAC ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, along with their mom and the baby," the press release said. The sheriff's office said that the victim's injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

Following the incident, Shaw was arrested by Volusia County Deputies. He was charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, neglect of a child and leaving an accident scene with injures. Shaw is currently being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail. He was not granted bail and is currently awaiting a court appearance, the press release said.

According to a police report provided to Newsweek, while speaking with deputies, Shaw allegedly admitted that he had run over his girlfriend and her two children. The report also noted that Shaw reportedly informed deputies that he initially fled the scene because "he was afraid of what was going to happen and he did not want to relinquish his son." Shaw eventually returned to the scene because he didn't want to get in any more trouble, the report said.
