Reddit users are applauding a man who called the cops on his fiancée's mother.

Describing the situation as "wild," user u/flawwo shared the story of how his future mother-in-law was arrested for trespassing outside their house.

Posting to the AmItheA****** subreddit, the man explained that his fiancée Regan has limited contact with her parents due to their love of swinging.

He wrote: "Growing up this was really rough on regan. Everybody in her small town knew and people made fun of her relentlessly.

"She hated it but at the same time they were her parents."

While Regan was a senior in high school, someone posted videos of her mom online, which were found by boys in her grade.

Her fiancée added: "[They] made her life hell. So she immediately went to a college far away and she really hasn't had a relationship with them [since]."

However, Regan's parents have continued to reach out to her and have started to blame her fiancé for their estrangement. Regan gets on very well with his parents, and after experiencing "normal" family life, has decided not to invite her mom and dad to the wedding. However, her siblings didn't take the news well.

He said: "She said she is embarrassed of [her parents] and doesn't want people knowing who her mom is.

"Her siblings got p***** at this and she decided to cut them off as well and not invite them. Which caused Regan's mom to explode."

Since being removed from the guestlist, Regan's mom has been calling constantly and showing up at the couple's house, despite being asked to leave every time.

He said: "This weekend Regan was at a bachelorette party. I was home alone. I hear someone at my door. I see it was Regan's mom and she looked emotional.

"I spoke through the doorbell and told her Regan wasn't home and she needed to leave. She kept knocking and saying 'I know she's in there, I just want to talk.'

"My neighbor texted me and asked if everything was okay as he heard yelling. Regan's mom came back to the door and kept pounding on it. Saying she wanted to talk to her daughter.

"I told her she had 1 minute to leave the property. She didn't. So I called the cops."

The police arrested the mom for trespassing, but the poster is concerned that he went too far.

A study by Karl Pillemer—a family sociologist and professor of human development at Cornell University— found that one in four US adults are estranged from their family. While researching for his book Fault Lines: Fractured Families and How to Mend Them, Pillemar he found a history of abuse (whether mental, physical, sexual or emotional) and neglect was a key reason why adult children cut off their parents.

Other common reasons for estrangement include a clash in values, disputes over money or inheritance, parental favoritism towards one sibling, and difficult in-laws.

Many Reddit users believed that flawwo did the right thing, with the post receiving over 6,000 upvotes and more than 900 comments.

One user said: "Her parents are certainly free to be swingers but it was very selfish not to think about how their lifestyle choices impacted their children."

Another wrote: "You have every right to call the cops on her Mom.

"She was trespassing, apparently causing a scene, was warned that the police would be coming and she still stuck around until the police showed up."

However, some suggested that the mother was concerned about her daughter's wellbeing.

One user suggested: "Look at it from their perspective. I would think the same thing If my daughter cut me off.

"Regan needs to explain her feelings clearly to them as to why they aren't welcome [in] her life."

And another agreed, writing: "Regan is setting her fiance up as the 'fall guy' by having him do the 'dirty work' of telling her parents 'I don't want to see you or talk to you.'

"She needs to own and control her own relationship with her parents."
