The internet has backed a man who told his girlfriend's stepsister to "f**k off" after she berated his thoughtful gift.

In a post shared Tuesday on the infamous Am I The A**hole Reddit group, which can be seen here, user aitathrowaway3490 explained how he put a lot of thought into his 22-year-old girlfriend Julie's gift.

The man, 23, said her dad died while her mother was pregnant with her and that she "takes this hard" and gets upset that she never knew her dad.

He added: "Julie sometimes takes this hard, getting upset that he never knew of her existence and she couldn't grow up with him. I do art on the side and I got inspiration online to make her a flipbook-type thing.

"I asked Julie for some 'milestone' photos (her first birthday, her graduation etc) as well as old photos of her dad. I drew out all the photos but added her dad to them. As Julie got older, I tried my best to draw out an accurate 'aged' representation of her dad."

He continued: "It took me a long time to finish it but I was honestly pretty proud of the end result. She had a small party yesterday, with family and friends and I gave her back her the book.

"She got really overwhelmed and seemed happy. Her stepsister however made a remark about how Julie got the 'short end of the stick' and a 'bunch of pictures from her boyfriend' for her birthday.

"I got kind of mad and told her to f**k off. She got upset and said she wasn't even talking to me and was just making a statement, so was I the AH (a**hole)?"

Since being shared, the post has attracted some 5,800 upvotes and many people raced to the comment section to share their thoughts.

Many of those commenters praised the man for his gift idea and said he was justified to use such strong language in the situation.

One Reddit user, whose comment was upvoted 8,200 times, said: "NTA (not the a**hole) at all. Your gift sounds amazing and it's the kind of thing that even if you and Julie don't work out, she would treasure it forever. Maybe there was a more tactful way to say it, but it was very much deserved."

Another commenter, whose reply was upvoted on some 2,100 occasions, added: "NTA. What a thoughtful gift. Stepsister was disrespectful. It's what your gf (girlfriend) thinks that matters."

While a third person posted: "NTA. What an amazing and thoughtful gift to marvel at the many works of art that we do."

According to an Insider poll carried out by SurveyMonkey in 2018, the median amount spent for couples who have dated for less than a year is $50.

But this increased to $100 for those couples who had been together for more than year.
