The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is returning to Amazon Prime Video this month—but what has not been marvelous is the long wait since the third season aired in December 2019.
Season 4 picks up where Season 3 left off, so viewers may find themselves a little lost if they cannot remember exactly what Midge (played by Rachel Broshanan) and the rest of the Mrs. Maisel characters were doing in the finale.
What happened to Midge's support slot for Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain)? Where are Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle) living now? And how did Joel (Michael Zegen) get tied up in an illegal nightclub business? All of these questions are important to the early episodes of Season 4, so read on to find out.
What Happened in 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Season 3?

Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended with the cliffhanger of Midge and Joel having a one-night stand. Anyone hoping the pair would get back together had their hopes dashed by the first episode of Season 3, which begins with Midge leaving his house in the middle of the night to join Shy on a USO tour.
This kind of gig was a new experience for Midge—and the stand-up experiencing different types of audience was a running theme in Season 3. As she went on the road with Shy, she learned that not every joke would work in every room.
Back in New York, Midge's father Abe has been let go from his Columbia job, forcing him and wife Rose to move in with Joel's parents, Moishe (Kevin Pollak) and Shirley (Caroline Aaron). Cue lots of bickering of the kind they have been doing since the show started. Eventually, things get better, especially after Abe lands a job as a writer for The Village Voice.
Joel, meanwhile, spends Season 3 trying to break into the club business. He finds a great spot and thinks he has been lucky to get premises with such low rent. Little does he know that this is because there is an illegal casino being run underneath his place. To make matters even more complicated, he begins to explore a relationship with Mei (Stephanie Hsu), a relation of the shady characters who run the casino.
With Joel out of the picture and life on the road sometimes lonely, Midge starts to consider her romantic prospects with Shy. The pair bond during a sailing trip, but that night he does not show up for his gig. Midge finds him on the yacht where they spent the day, discovering that he has been beaten up by a male date. He asks her to keep his sexuality a secret—the early 1960s are hardly a safe space for gay performers, let alone Black ones.

Midge, quite frankly, does not do a good job of keeping Shy's secret. After she gets nervous before a gig at the Apollo in Harlem, Shy's manager Reggie (Sterling K. Brown) suggests that to make her set work for that crowd, she should talk about her time on tour with Shy. Which she does, making jokes that hint at his sexual orientation.
Understandably spooked, Shy drops her from the tour, leaving Midge and her manager Susie (Alex Borstein) on the tarmac as he flies to his next stop.
Season 4 picks up that same night, with Midge and Susie left reeling from what could be the end of both their careers.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 will air two episodes a week from February 18.
