What We Know About Mike Pence's Movements on Jan 6

New images have emerged of former Vice President Mike Pence and his family after they were forced into hiding as Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6.

A photo, obtained by ABC News, shows Pence with his daughter Charlotte, his brother, U.S. Rep. Greg Pence, and his wife, Karen, in a room just off the Senate floor after being evacuated from the chamber floor as the insurrection was taking place.

According to an unnamed source who was also in the room, the former second lady, who is seen drawing curtains in the ceremonial room, did so as she was worried the rioters would see the Pence family and target them.

During the Capitol attack, Trump supporters could be heard chanting "hang Mike Pence."

Both prior, and even during, the January 6 attack, Trump had falsely asserted that Pence could prevent the certification of the 2020 election results in favor of Joe Biden during his purely ceremonial role as presiding officer of the Senate.

Another photo obtained by ABC shows Pence and his daughter back in the Capitol building, working on the speech the former vice president would give when the joint session to certify the election resumed on the evening of January 6, 2021.

The photo shed new light on where the former vice president was before, during, and after the January 6 attack.

On the morning and early afternoon on January 6, Trump supporters had already gathered in Washington D.C. to attend "stop the steal" protests and listen to the former president's "fight like hell" speech at the Ellipse.

Just after 1 p.m., Pence begins the joint session to certify the election results on the chamber floor.

Around 45 minutes later, a riot was officially declared as Trump supporters stormed past police officers protecting the Capitol building.

Pence was then removed from the Senate by the Secret Service at around 2:14 p.m., by which point the rioters had already smashed through windows and entered the Capitol building. At one point, Pence was said to be less than 100 feet from a group of protesters while being escorted away for his safety.

Ten minutes after Pence was led out of the Senate chamber by security, Trump tweeted that the then-vice president "didn't have the courage to do what should have been done" and stop the results being certified.

By this point, Pence is now believed to be in the room just off the Senate floor with his family, as seen in the ABC News photo.

Minutes later, the Secret Service escorted Pence and his family to an underground loading dock beneath the Capitol, where they remained for several hours.

At 4:08 p.m., Pence phoned Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, urging him to "clear the Capitol."

Marc Short, Pence's former chief of staff, told Fox News that the former vice president also called congressional leaders Kevin McCarthy, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to make sure they were safe, but did not think it would be "constructive" to call Trump.

At around 8 p.m., the Capitol was declared secure and Pence reconvened the Senate to carry on with the certification of the 2020 election results.

"Today was a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol. But thanks to the swift efforts of U.S. Capitol Police, federal, state and local law enforcement, the violence was quelled," Pence said. "The Capitol is secured. And the people's work continues."
