A mother-in-law has caught heat online after her son's wife shared she had faced demands to have a gender reveal party, despite repeatedly explaining that she doesn't want one.
The wife explained in a popular online post that she is expecting a baby with her husband but planning to move to her home country to raise it, due to the lower cost.
Unlike many, she's found the pregnancy has caused issues with her mother-in-law. Research by The Mother-In-Law Project found that 58 percent of mother-in-law's said children changed their relationship for the better, while 36 percent of daughter-in-laws said the same.
"I have been basically letting my husband's mother play doll with us. She is going to miss her son and grandbaby. So no big deal. I have included her in dr Apts, milestone events etc," wrote the wife in a post with 5,000 likes and comments that have reached 8,000 likes.
The wife explained that where she's from, gender reveal parties are not that common and something she doesn't' feel comfortable with, especially knowing that "some of his family members are those weird boy favoring people."
Because of this, she rejected the idea politely and said they could have a bigger baby shower instead.
"Last Thursday, we went to the doctor. The doctor asks me if I wanna know the gender of the baby and I say 'yes.' My mother-in-law shushes me. She says no. To put it in an envelope so we can give it to the person responsible for the gender reveal. I say no again and just ask to tell us. My mother-in-law starts getting impatient and saying that it's not a big deal, to just let her have this one thing."
The mother-in-law left the appointment crying and phoned her son to tell him.
"He said he understands me and that he is also not a fan of gender reveals, but we should play along because his mother is sad," she added.
Despite the wife being left undecided, given that they are leaving soon, Reddit users were the opposite, weighing strongly against the mother-in-law.
"The Doctor asked YOU if YOU wanted to know the sex of the baby. As the mother that's your decision. Mother-in-law can mind her own damn business, and by gosh your husband is gutless wanting to play along with her," wrote one user, gaining over 8,000 likes on the comment.
"Honestly, the topic is irrelevant. You cannot give in when mother-in-law cries and tries to get her son to override what you want and have the complete unilateral right to decide. It will set the stage for a toxic relationship going forward," added another.
