There, while clearing his mom's house of the items she collected while living as hoarder in her last years, Jake discovers a diary that may hold secrets to his own past, and that of Rachel. She is an intriguing young woman on a mission of her own, searching for her birth mother who used to work for Jake's parents.

Together, Jake and Rachel embark on a journey to confront their pasts and discover a future that's totally unexpected.

Jake is played by This Is Us actor Justin Hartley, while Rachel is played by Barrett Doss, whom fans may recognise from Station 19 and Iron Fist.

The Noel Diary also stars Bonnie Bedelia as Ellie, James Remar as Scott Turner, and Essence Atkins as Noel Hayden, as well as a very cute dog who plays Jake's pet, Ava.

The film was released on Netflix on November 24 and has already proved hugely popular with viewers.

After finishing the movie, many rushed to social media to post their wishes for a follow-up.

"Sooooo when are we getting a sequel to The Noel Diary," asked one fan, as another wrote: "So, there's going to be a sequel to The Noel Diary right?"

"We need sequel for the Noel Diary please," wrote another Netflix viewer.

Netflix is yet to officially announce a sequel to The Noel Diary, but there is a pretty big hint that suggests it could be set to return for another installment.

The Noel Diary film is based on the book of the same name, written by author Richard Paul Evans. There are three more novels in his anthology series: The Noel Stranger, Noel Street, and The Noel Letters.

Each of the books in the series focuses on a different set of characters and their experiences of love at Christmas time. The second one, The Noel Stranger, focuses on a new character called Maggie Walther, and would presumably be next on Netflix's list if it is planning to adapt the full series.

According to GoodReads, Maggie Walther is a woman who isolates herself from the world after being publicly humiliated by her husband when he's arrested for bigamy. Encouraged by her friends to get herself back out there, Maggie begins to trust again when she meets Christmas tree lot owner Andrew, but their bond is threatened when she discovers a dark secret from Andrew's past.

As all of the stories in the Noel Collection focus on different characters, Netflix could find a brand-new cast to portray the characters in The Noel Stranger if it does end up making the movie version. Or, Netflix could keep on Hartley, Barrett, and the rest of the stars to play the new roles, like other anthology series such as American Horror Story do.

The Noel Diary ends on something of a cliffhanger, with ambiguity over Jake and Rachel's future, so Netflix could also create a new, original sequel to their story, even though the source material doesn't follow Jake and Rachel's journeys any further.

This would give the audience some closure over Jake and Rachel, which, according to Twitter, they would clearly be receptive to.

Newsweek has contacted Netflix for comment.
