🎙️ Voice is AI-generated. Inconsistencies may occur.

The day after the 94th Academy Awards, everyone is still talking about that slap.

While presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, which her husband Will Smith did not appreciate. He approached Rock onstage and slapped him across the face. When he returned to his seat, Smith shouted "Get my wife's name out yo f****** mouth."

The internet came alive in the wake of the incident, with celebrities and other viewers tweeting their reactions and sharing memes.

Shortly after, Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in tennis biopic King Richard, his first Academy Award. During his speech, he referenced the outburst and apologized to the Academy and to his fellow nominees.

After the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science said it "does not condom violence of any form." On Monday, the Academy said it condemned Smith's actions and has officially started a formal review around the incident.

Uncut Moment of Smith Slapping Rock Viewed 91M Times

When Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage at Sunday's Oscars, the show's audio was cut in the United States. It left some viewers thinking something was wrong with their TV and all wondering what in the world just happened.

So, viewers turned to social media for answers. The wild moment wasn't censored in every country, including Japan, Australia and the U.K. Videos showing the full interaction between Smith and Rock were posted on social media and two videos from Japan and Australia have now been viewed more than 91 million times on Twitter alone.

The videos filled-in-the-blanks (literally) for U.S. viewers after watching Smith laugh at Rock's joke then walk on stage and slap the presenter.

"Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me," Rock said, the uncensored clips revealed.

"Keep my wife's name out your f****** mouth!" Smith yelled as he returned to his seat.

Smith Says 'Use Your Head' Before Fighting in 90s Video

An old video of Will Smith advocating against violence has been circulating Monday following his controversial slap at Sunday's Oscars.

The video was part of "The More You Know," a series of public service announcements aired on NBC in the 1990s. In the 25 second video, Smith describes a situation where someone wants to fight and encourages viewers to use "their head" before they get "all crazy."

"Hey, check this out," Smith begins. "Here's the situation. Say you out with your boyfriend or your girlfriend, you know, you're at school, you're at a club or something getting busy, just having fun."

"Somebody steps up to you, they tell you they want to rumble. Alright, now just stop for a second. Before you lose your head, get all crazy and toss your hands up, just think. The person that uses their head can always defeat the person that's just trying to use the hands. Now remember that, because the more you know."

TikTok user Barry Finnegan posted the video Monday writing, "well that didn't age well."

Smith went on stage during Sunday's Oscars and slapped award presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Chris Rock Showed 'Restraint', Charlamagne Tha God Says

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God commended Chris Rock's composure after he was slapped by Will Smith while presenting an award at the Oscars.

On his show The Breakfast Club Monday morning, Charlamagne Tha God, also known by his name Lenard McKelvey, praised Rock for his restraint, comparing him to Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.

"Y'all gave Supreme Court judge nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson a lot of love for showing restraint last week, and she deserved that," McKelvey said, "but can we please drop one of Clue's bombs for Chris Rock? Not only did he show restraint. He kept the show moving."

A "Clue bomb" is a term frequently used on The Breakfast Club that McKelvey and other hosts use to commend someone. It refers to the show's disc jockey, Ernesto Shaw, popularly known as DJ Clue.

McKelvey noted Rock's ability to keep up commentary and praised him for "never stopped being professional" after the incident happened.

"He never stopped being Chris Rock, he never stopped being a professional," he said.

"I respect his restraint because that could have gone a whole different way," McKelvey said, adding that Rock kept it together to get preserve the moment for Quest Love, who went on to win the Best Documentary Feature Oscar Rock was presenting.

'Fresh Prince' Star Shows Support for Will Smith

Janet Huber, who played Aunt Vivian for three seasons on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, showed her support for her former co-star Will Smith after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars Sunday night.

"I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to slap the mess out of so many folks who have disrespected me," she said in a tweet.

She added that Chris Rock has a history for "mean spirited" jokes about Black women.

"Will stood up for his wife, Chris Rock is always disrespecting Black women," Huber added. "Mean spirited hides behind comedy."

On Instagram, Hubert said she was "so proud" of Smith for his Oscar win.

"There is only so much one can take...sometimes you have to slap back," she wrote. "Celebrate the win...nothing else matters."

Hubert added that the actions of both Smith and Rock was "incorrect," but "Chris didn't need to go there."

"Met him once... it was enough for me...very mean spirited," she said.

Academy Launches Formal Review of Oscars Slap

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences met to discuss Will Smith's behavior at the Oscars Sunday night.

In a statement, the Academy said it "condemns" Smith's actions and has officially started a review of the incident in which Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock, the Associated Press reported.

"The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show," the statement said. "We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law."

Oscars Producer Addresses Infamous Slap During the Show

The producer of the 2022 Academy Awards addressed the infamous slap during the ceremony Sunday night.

"I said it wouldn't be boring," producer Will Packer tweeted after the ceremony.

In response to a reply tweet condemning him for "making jokes about an assault that happened during your show," Packer said he wanted to bring levity to the moment.

"Black people have a defiant spirit of laughter when it comes to dealing with pain because there has been so much of it," Packer said. "I don't feel the need to elucidate that for you.

Packer also acknowledged that the experience was "painful" for him.

"But I also don't mind being transparent and say that this was a very painful moment for me," he added. "On many levels."

Twitter User Predicts Will Smith, Chris Rock Slap Six Years Ago

One Twitter user seemingly predicted the Will Smith slap at the 2022 Oscars six years ago.

Twitter user JASON (@_ja_s_on_) tweeted that Will Smith "has to punch Chris Rock in the face" for jokes he made about her during his monologue at the 2016 Oscars.

Chris Rock hosted the Academy Awards at the height of the "Oscars So White" campaign calling out the lack of diversity represented at the awards show.

Jada Pinkett Smith decided to boycott the ceremony that year, and called on others in Hollywood to do that same.

"Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rhianna's panties; I wasn't invited," Rock said during his monologue.

He added that he understands Pinkett Smith was upset that her husband, Will Smith, was not nominated for his role in Concussion.

"I get it, you get mad saying it's not fair that Will was this good and didn't get nominated," he said. "It's also not fair that Will got paid $20 million for Wild Wild West."

After Chris Rock made another dig at Pinkett Smith during the Oscars ceremony Sunday night, it appears JASON's tweet aged well.

His original tweet from 2016 now has over 123,000 likes and almost 29,000 retweets.

The tweet from last night has over 574,000 likes and over 69,000 retweets.

Chris Rock Sees Boost in Ticket Sales for Comedy Tour

Chris Rock is seeing a boost in ticket sales for his comedy tour after he was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars.

Rock's "Ego Death World Tour" has more than 50 shows in cities across the United States and other countries.

Ticket reseller TickPick reported a surge in ticket sales for his shows Monday after the incident occurred.

We sold more tickets to see Chris Rock overnight than we did in the past month combined," the company tweeted.

Ticket prices have also increased.

Screenshots from StubHub showed a jump in prices for Rock's show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston, which is scheduled for this Friday. Tickets for one table increased from $338 just before 11 a.m. to $450 at about noon. By 1 p.m., table tickets were completely sold out, according to StubHub.

Did Will Smith Violate Academy Standards?

Will Smith's on-stage slap at the Academy Awards may cost him his Oscar.

After slapping Chris Rock on the stage, Will Smith went on to win his first Academy Award for his lead role in King Richard.

Many are now wondering if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will take Smith's Oscar back.

After the producer Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal in 2018, the Academy issued new "Standards of Conduct." Weinstein was then stripped of his Oscars for his 1998 film Shakespeare in Love.

The Standards and Conduct letter reminds Academy members that their position is a "privilege offered to only a select few within the global community of filmmakers" and that they "must also behave ethically by upholding the Academy's values of respect for human dignity, inclusion, and a supportive environment that fosters creativity."

The letter specifically mentions that there "is no place in the Academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates recognized standards of decency," adding that the organization is against "any form of abuse" and "harassment."

Anyone found in violation of these standards could face disciplinary actions from the organization's Board of Governors, "including suspension or expulsion" from the Academy.

After the Oscar ceremony Sunday, the Academy tweeted that it "does not condone violence of any form."

Chris Rock has not yet filed a police report against Smith, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Howard Stern Calls Will Smith, Trump 'the Same Guy'

Radio host Howard Stern compared Will Smith's actions during the Oscars to those of former President Donald Trump.

"Not one person came out, because he's Will Smith, this is how Trump gets away with s***. Will Smith and Trump are the same guy," Stern said during a Monday taping of his SiriusXM show. "He decided he's going to take matters into his own hands. At a time when the world is at war. Bad timing, man. Calm your f**king a** down."

Stern also praised Chris Rock for his "fast" comedy and ability to recover from the incident right away.

"Chris Rock—Jesus—the guy is so fast, comedy-wise, he actually recovered and made a joke and said 'Gee, best Oscars yet,'" he said. "He was able to comment outside of what just happened to him and then he got flustered."

ESPN host Stephen A. Smith called Will Smith's slap a "shameful act."

"To go up on stage and slap Chris Rock like that, he's lucky he didn't get his a** kicked, particularly after the event was over," he said in a video posted on Twitter.

Stephen Smith also shamed Will Smith for interrupting the Oscars, which was put on by Will Packer, a Black producer.

"There is no excuse for it, don't even try to justify it," he said.

After the incident happened live on the Oscar broadcast, Stephen Smith said Will Smith "stained" his career.

"If Will Smith seriously did that — and he wins the OSCAR — he just stained the greatest moment of his career," Stephen Smith tweeted. "You cannot do that S$&@!! Especially as a BLACK MAN, in that position, to ANOTHER BLACK MAN (Chris Rock) on THAT STAGE. If this was not a joke, Will won't live this down!!!"

Stephen Smith later clarified that he did not know that Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia at the time of the slap.

"She's wonderful and great, so is Will Smith," Stephen Smith tweeted. "But you do NOT do what Will did in that setting. Go backstage and handle that sh*t if you must."

Judd Apatow Faces Backlash for Now-Deleted Tweets About Will Smith

Director Judd Apatow faced backlash for his now-deleted tweets saying Will Smith "could have killed" Chris Rock when he slapped him on the Oscars stage.

"Seems like Will Smith's plan to get comedians and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out," he tweeted. "The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism. Also- GI Jane was gorgeous. What exactly is insulting about being compared to a ripped, stunning, Demi?"

Twitter users replied to his tweet, noting Jada Pinkett Smith's experience with alopecia. But Apatow said Will Smith "could have killed" Chris Rock.

"He [Smith] could have killed him," he replied. "That's pure out of control rage and violence. They've heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades. They are not freshman in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind."

Apatow also seemed to imply Smith should not have taken the joke so seriously.

"I have more hair on my back than on my head and I can take a joke about it," he tweeted.

Apatow also said Smith overshadowed Quest Love's Oscar win for his documentary Summer of Soul.

"Will Smith screwed over Quest Love who deserved his moment without that toxic nonsense before him," Apatow tweeted. "I'm glad Chris is ok. Will learning nothing training for Ali. Will Smith's punches are as soft as his raps."

Twitter uses are quick to express their frustration over Apatow's tweets, calling his comments racist.

One Twitter user, Jason (One Piece Stan), wrote: "Judd Apatow got on twitter and attempted to portray will smith as a murderer. The level of anti-Blackness from white folks in Hollywood will never surprise me LMAO."

Author Roxane Gay replied to Apatow's tweets.

"This is a wild thing to say Judd," she tweeted. "As a fan, I urge you to really rethink this. It was not uncontrolled violence. The video is widely available so you know this."

Others called Apatow out for not condemning the behavior of actors he has worked with.

Celebrities Condemn Violence, Praise Smith's Passion

Celebrities, both those inside the Dolby Theater and those watching from their couches at home, shared their reactions to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.

The slap divided many people, with many condemning the violence.

Comedian Kathy Griffin said it is a "bad practice."

"Let me tell you something, it's a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian," tweeted comedian and actress Kathy Griffin. "Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters."

Director Rob Reiner said Smith owes Rock a "huge apology."

"Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology, he tweeted. "There is no excuse for what he did. He's lucky Chris is not filing assault charges. The excuses he made tonight were bullsh*t."

Producer Marshall Herskovitz called on the Academy to take action against Smith.

"I call upon the Academy, of which I am a member, to take disciplinary action against Will Smith. He disgraced our entire community tonight," the Blood Diamond producer tweeted.

Others praised Smith for his passion in defense of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Actor Colman Domingo said Smith's behavior was truly "West Philly."

"I thought, he's from West Philly, just like I'm from West Philly. We're very passionate people," he said during an interview at an Oscars after party, adding that Smith's emotions "got the better of him"

Comedian Tiffany Haddish, who stared in Girl's Trip with Jada Pickett Smith, called Smith's actions "the most beautiful thing I ever seen."

"When I saw a Black man stand up for his wife. That meant so much to me," Haddish told People magazine after the Oscars. "As a woman, who has been unprotected, for someone to say like, 'Keep my wife's name out your mouth, leave my wife alone,' that's what your husband is supposed to do, right? Protect you."

She added that "meant the world to me."

"Maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives," she added.

One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush said "violence" and "assault" is "never the answer" but also condemned Rock's comments.

"Violence isn't ok," Bush tweeted. "Assault is never the answer. Also? This is the 2nd time that Chris has made fun of Jada on the #Oscars stage, & tonight he went after her alopecia. Punching down at someone's auto-immune disease is wrong. Doing so on purpose is cruel. They both need a breather."

Jada Pinkett Smith Talks Struggle with Hair Loss

For some who watched the Oscars Sunday night, Chris Rock's joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair may have not seemed worthy of a slap.

"Jada, love you, G.I. Jane 2—can't wait to see it," Rock said, referencing the 1997 war drama G.I. Jane that featured actress Demi Moore with a shaved head.

But Pinkett Smith has been open about her experience with alopecia, a condition that causes hair to fall out.

During a 2018 Red Table Talk, Pickett Smith said she began losing "handfulls of hair" in the shower.

She said she believed at the time the hair loss was related to stress.

"I was just like 'Oh my god am I going bald?' It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear," she said. "That's why I cut my hair and continue to cut it."

After consulting her doctors, she didn't get answers at first.

"It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear," Smith said.

She said later that she started steroid injections that "seem to be helping."

What We've Heard From Chris Rock So Far

Despite having his moment on stage interrupted, Rock powered on and managed to finish his role, presenting the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Rock proceeded to tell a light joke about documentaries, before listing the nominees, then announcing the winner. He awarded the Best Documentary Feature Oscar to Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson and the team behind Summer of Soul. Ironically, Philadelphia-native Questlove is a notable famous friend of both Rock and Smith.

As Questlove gave his acceptance speech, Rock could be seen in the right of frame onscreen reacting to what had just happened.

Rock has also yet to speak out publicly about the incident, either in interviews or on social media. The only piece of information we've heard from Rock is that he won't be pressing charges against Smith.

In a statement, the Los Angeles Police Department acknowledged last night's incident and confirmed that "the individual involved has declined to file a police report."

However, that doesn't mean that Rock couldn't still press charges against Smith if he wanted to. The LAPD continued, "If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."

What We've Heard From Will Smith So Far

At this point, Smith will no doubt be recuperating after what turned out to be an incredibly eventful night for him, filled with highs and lows.

After his confrontation with Rock live during the ceremony, Smith was given a pep talk by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry during the commercial break before he went on to accept award for Best Actor at the 2022 Oscars. Like any other award-winner, he then proceeded to attend the Vanity Fair Oscars party with his family.

He was filmed on the dance floor, Oscar statuette in-hand, rapping and dancing along to some of his own songs.

While he's yet to address the incident with Rock directly in interviews, he may have made a wry comment moments after the slap. Around the same time that the incident occurred, he commented on his own recent picture and said, "You can't invite people from Philly or Baltimore nowhere!!"

While Smith has yet to clearly update his own social media, his son Jaden has. He wrote on Twitter, "And That's How We Do It."

Newsweek has contacted Will Smith's publicist for comment.
