How to Fix Overwatch 2 'Player Is In a Different Version' Error

Overwatch 2 has encountered a myriad of issues, bugs, and errors since the game was released. From long queue times that left people waiting hours to get i, to errors even getting the game started, the launch experience has been less than ideal.

When Overwatch 2 does work, though, it works great, and players have been having a fun time leveling their Battle Pass and learning Kiriko's new abilities. But, another issue has started to crop up lately, one that has become more rampant since the game's latest update, and that's an error when trying to invite friends to your game.

Sometimes, when trying to invite friends to your game, players will run into an error telling them that it can't invite the user because the "player is in a different version." While this can happen sometimes when users haven't updated to the most recent patch, even those on the same version of the game have reported running into this issue.

Players can fix most of the issues in Overwatch 2 with a quick restart or by following some simple steps. Blizzard

Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to go about fixing it. One of the first is to change over from the live version of the game to the beta. The beta can be selected from the Battle.net launcher, using the dropdown about the Play button in the launcher. This will download the latest beta patch, which lets users test out new changes coming to the game before they hit the live branch.

You can also join the beta by selecting Overwatch 2 in the launcher, going to Game Settings, and then selecting the beta and joining it. Keep in mind that the beta version may also introduce new bugs and errors.

If that doesn't fix your issue, though, you can also try inviting the player directly using the game's chat function. To do this, launch into Overwatch 2 and then using the chat box in the bottom left, type /invite and then the player's name. This should help you bypass the error as well.

Alternatively, if neither of the previous solutions works, players have reported some success with removing those friends and then adding them back to their Friend List. This should resolve the issue completely, though it may pop up again at some point down the line.

Another common error that players have reported, too, is an empty Friend List. This issue can be fixed as well, so make sure you check out Newsweek's guide for more details on that. With Overwatch 2's Halloween event coming up, players will want to make sure their game is running as smoothly as possible, and that they can invite their friends without any issues.
