Patrick Mahomes Hasn't Changed His Game-Day Underwear in at Least 5 Years

Many sports fans have game-day rituals. Since watching from afar can feel rather helpless, it's natural to latch onto something, whether it's a favorite seat or a good-luck jersey, when the chips are down.

But did you know that Patrick Mahomes clings to a similar habit?

Yes, you read that correctly. Arguably the best quarterback in today's NFL won't take the field without donning the same pair of lucky red underwear.

Don't believe it? Feeling morbidly curious? Either way, let's roll the tape.

Mahomes Talked Lucky Underwear on the Manningcast

While ESPN's Manningcast might not be everyone's cup of tea—some viewers would rather focus purely on the game—Peyton and Eli do manage to land some big-time guests. And, from a football perspective, it's tough to get any bigger than Monday night's appearance from Patrick Mahomes.

During No. 15's time on the air, he was asked about a comment that former KC backup Chad Henne made about Mahomes wearing the same good-luck underwear every game. It seems that Henne was telling the truth.

"Well, you know, first, my wife, Brittany, got them for me, so, I had to, I'm not throwing y'all down, but I have to wear them, you know," the Chiefs star explained. "But, at the same time, I threw them on that first season. We had a pretty good season that season."

And while you may be fearing the worst, it sounds like the undergarments are in pretty good shape, all things considered.

"I only wear them for game day, though," Mahomes added. "So, I can't get, they're not too worn down. They're not like these nasty, I clean them. ... I wash them, every once in a while at least. ... I mean, if we're on a hot streak, I can't wash them, you know? Like, I gotta just keep it rolling. So, you know, as long as I'm winning football games, I'll keep the superstition going."

Underwear or Not, the Results Are Striking

Since Mahomes spent most of his rookie year on the bench, it's not clear if he's worn the same underwear for six or seven NFL campaigns (Newsweek contacted his agent via e-mail in an attempt to clarify that). Regardless of the finer details, though, it's safe to assume that the quarterback won't be changing things up anytime soon.

Since stepping under center, Mahomes has gone an incredible 71-18 in the regular season. His playoff record is just as impressive, with 11 wins, as compared to three losses; two of those wins, of course, clinched Super Bowl titles.

But the successes go beyond simple wins and losses. The QB has already thrown for more than 26,000 yards and 209 touchdowns. Those would be respectable numbers for an entire career, let alone 89 starts.

And, if that's not enough, add two regular-season MVP awards and two Super Bowl MVP crowns into the mix. He's also written a new chapter in the Chiefs' franchise history, changing how the club is perceived on a national level.

Put that all together, and Chiefs fans will be hoping that Mahomes—and the red underwear—will stick around for years to come.
