An Ohio pizza delivery driver fatally shot a man who attempted to rob a Papa John's restaurant, according to reports.
WDTN Channel 2 reported that authorities said two men wearing masks entered the New Carlisle pizza restaurant at about 11 p.m. on Sunday. One of the robbers appeared to be carrying a knife, while the other was armed with a crowbar, and an employee rang 911, according to the channel.
The employee told WHIO TV: "They came running in with weapons and tried to rob us. They had weapons, the one had a big crowbar and the other one looked like a knife and they were sprinting toward us."
WDTN Channel 2 reported that the pizza delivery driver then opened fire, hitting one of the men. It added that emergency service personnel subsequently tried to tell the employees how to give first aid to the man.
The outlet said the workers were too upset by what had happened and that there were no clean towels in the store that could be used to assist the suspect.
Major Chris Clark of the Clark County Sheriff's Office told WHIO TV the two men had tried to rob the Papa John's as staff members were preparing to close for the day.
The second man fled the scene on foot and is still being searched for, he said. The sheriff's office asked for anyone with information about him to come forward.
According to the outlet, the Clark County Coroner identified the man who was shot dead as 21-year-old Gage Melton. It didn't release the cause of death or say where Melton was from.
WDTN reported that the delivery driver who fatally shot Melton hasn't been charged and added that the sheriff's office said it appeared to be a justified use of force.
No other people have been charged in relation to the shooting or attempted robbery as of Tuesday morning.
Driver Had Concealed Carry License
The identity of the pizza delivery driver hasn't been released. According to the outlet, the delivery driver had a concealed carry license.
Concealed carry is legal for residents in the state who hold an Ohio Concealed Handgun Licence as well as for non-residents who hold a valid state license permit, according to USConcealedCarry.com.
Residents can obtain a license once they are 21 or older after they complete eight hours of firearms training and meet other requirements.
Newsweek has contacted the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the Clark County Coroner and Papa John's for comment.
