Meet the 15 Earthshot Prize Finalists
Late tonight, the Prince and Princess of Wales will award the Earthshot Prize to five winners among 15 finalists working to combat the effects of climate change.
Here are the companies being honored at tonight's ceremony:
LanzaTech
This American-based company is a finalist in the "fix our climate" category.
Burning fossil fuels, like carbon, traps heat in the Earth's atmosphere and increases global temperatures. This company mitigates the harm of carbon pollution by using bacteria to recycle carbon pollution into profitable and sustainable products.
"While industry is still using fossil fuels, we need solutions that capture emissions at source. At LanzaTech, we don't just do that – we also turn those pollutants into products that are useful for society and, in turn, keep fossil resources in the ground," CEO Dr. Jennifer Holmgren said in a statement. "It is an honor to have been recognized by The Earthshot Prize for this work."
We are humbled and honored to be named a finalist for the #EarthshotPrize! Only through collaboration & the support of our team and community will we succeed in repairing and regenerating our world. Congratulations to all the incredible finalists! https://t.co/nqPKLTZvN3
— LanzaTech (@LanzaTech) November 4, 2022
44.01
This Oman company is another "fix our climate" finalist.
Named after the molecular weight of carbon dioxide, 44.01 removes CO2 permanently by mineralizing it in peridotite, a rock found in abundance in Oman.
44.01 accelerates this naturally-occurring process by pumping carbonated water into seams of peridotite deep underground. This process also removed the CO2 forever, meaning there is no need for long-term monitoring or insurance. This makes it more cost-effective, scalable and safer.
"The answers to the problems our planet faces can often be found in the natural world. At 44.01, we have found a natural process that removes carbon and we've accelerated it," Founder and Carbon General Talal Hasan said. "We believe this process is replicable globally and can play a key role in helping our planet to heal."

Kheyti
The India-based organization falls under the category of "protect and restore nature."
This startup developed a Greenhouse-in-a-Box to help small-hold farmers in India protect their crops from the unpredictable elements and pests. Kheyti also trains and supports farmers to ensure their greenhouse is as effective as possible.
Plants in these greenhouses require 98 percent less water than those outdoors and yields are seven-times higher. There are 1,00 farms with a Kheyti greenhouse and the company hope to grow that to 50,000 farms by 2027.
"We are honored to be recognized by The Earthshot Prize this year," Co-founder and CEO Kaushik Kappagantulu said in a statement. "The world depends on its small-hold farmers and yet their lives are amongst the hardest on earth. Our Greenhouse-in-a-Box is empowering farmers in India today. The steps we have already taken at Kheyti are now building to change farmers' lives at scale."

Ampd Enertainer
This company from Hong Kong, China is a "clean our air" finalist.
Ampd Energy's Enertainer product is an all-electric battery energy storage system designed to power construction sites without the need for direct use of fossil fuels. This reduces or eliminates the harmful pollution produced by fossil fuels used on construction sites.
The battery can power any type of electrical equipment, from cranes to hoists, welders and barbenders, with its lithium-ion batteries.
"Construction is responsible for 11 percent of the world's energy-related CO2 emissions, in part because of its reliance on burning fossil-fuels, which emits CO2, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and other harmful fumes," Co-founder and CEO Brandon Ng said. "The Enertainer eliminates the need for direct-use of fossil fuels on construction sites. We want to eliminate emissions from construction sites, and we couldn't be prouder of this recognition from The Earthshot Prize."

The City of Amsterdam
The city's circular economy is a "build a waste-free world" finalist.
In 2020, Amsterdam committed to building a circular economy by becoming the first city to waste nothing and recycle everything by 2050.
It will cut food, product and construction waste and shift people from a "use-and-dispose" mindset towards one of "rethink- and-reuse."
"We need to redesign the way we work, live and consume in order to cut out waste," Program Manager Rene Koop said. "As a municipality we are pioneering on the circular economy, but realize that we need to work together with residents, companies and other cities to really make it happen."

Desert Agriculture Transformation
The China-based initiative is turning barren deserts into productive, farmable land in an affordable, timely manner.
The "protect and restore nature" finalist uses a technique called "desert soilization" which mixes a water-based paste with sand and applies it to the desert surface. This gives the ground the same physical and ecological properties as soil – with the same capacity for water and fertilizer retention and ventilation.
"Climate change is turning more of the Earth's land into inhospitable desert. When fertile land becomes barren, farmers cannot grow crops, meaning more hunger, particularly in the poorest parts of the world," Chongqing Jiaotong University Professor Yi Zhijian said. "Our solution transforms dry plains into productive pastures. We think we have found a solution to rising food insecurity."

Fleather
The India-based company Phool is a "build a waste-free world" finalist.
Pholl collects floral waste, like pesticides, from the holy Ganges River, where pilgrim drink the water.
As they collected the water to turn into incense sticks, they notices a thick mat-like substance began to grow over the unused fibers lying on their factory floor. This material was turned into a sustainable alternative to environmentally damaging animal and plastic leather, which they called Fleather.
"We began life with a simple idea: to clean up India's holiest river. In the process, we've discovered a material growing on our factory floor that could one day replace Animal leather for good," Founder and CEO Ankit Agarwal said. "Sometimes ground-breaking ideas come from unlikely situations."
“Fleather solves a multitude of problems – first, the deep environmental footprint of animal leather, second is the inhumane animal slaughter, and third is the pollution caused by ceremonial flowers.” ?

This Australia-based group empowers indigenous women to protect the critical coral reef ecosystem.
The "revive our oceans" finalist enlists indigenous rangers to protect the reefs from the constant threat off the coast of Queensland and the nearby land ravaged by regular bushfires.
Their work brings together ancient knowledge with most modern tools, like drones that monitor coral changes, forest fires and land degradation.
"This place has always been our home, but today we risk losing it and the unique culture that has existed here for millennia," Managing Director Larissa Hale said. "Our Women Rangers Network exists to protect our home and continue our traditions. We have made big first steps, but we have a long way still to go."
“Our solution supports, mentors and provides culturally appropriate training for these women so they can use technology to better manage their land and sea.”

Mukuru Clean Stoves
This "clean our air" finalist from Kenya is working to reduce the emission of harmful chemicals from unsafe, traditional stoves.
The charcoal used to fuel stoves in the areas surrounding Nairobi can cause respiratory infections. Instead, these clean stoves use processed biomass made from charcoal, wood and sugarcane that burns cleaner and creates 90 percent less pollution than an open fire and 70 percent less fuel than a traditional cookstove.
"Mukuru Clean Stoves began as a solution to a problem that I had felt personally in my own life," Founder and CEO Charlot Magayi said. "Today, we have an opportunity to transform the lives of millions, with cheaper, safer and more sustainable cookstoves and fuels."

Roam
This "clean our air" finalist from Kenya was founded at a Swedish university. It makes affordable electric vehicles made in Africa, designed for the African market.
In Kenya, motorcycle taxis are the easiest and cheapest way to get around, but they are also major CO2 polluters.
Roam aims to make electric transport accessible to a far broader market, setting the standard for electric mobility in Africa.
"In Kenya, motorcycle taxis so called Boda Boda's are the best way to get around and many rely on them for a living. However, they are also among the highest CO2 emitting vehicles on the market," Co-Founder and CEO Filip Lövström said. "The company builds motorcycles and buses tailored to the market with affordability and reliability at the forefront. We want to help the environment, and drivers' pockets."

SeaForester
This "revive our oceans" finalist based in Portugal is working to restore seaweed forests threatened by rising ocean temperatures, pollution and coastal developments.
Seaweed is essential for capturing carbon and making waters healthier. SeaForester is using "green gravel" to grow more if it. Seaweed spores are seeded onto small stones and scattered into the ocean. The stones latch on to the underlying reef, the seaweed grows and multiplies, spreading across the ocean floor.
Once planted, the seaweed forests reverse acidification, build up depleted fish stocks, boost marine biodiversity, improve water quality and capture carbon.
"Over the past half-century, half the world's kelp forests have disappeared. This is a disaster for marine ecosystems, local fishing industries and the climate," Founder and CEO Pål Bakken said. "Our solution aims to restore what has been destroyed. Reforesting our seas will help reverse ocean acidification, build up fish stocks and curtail climate change."

The Great Bubble Barrier
This Netherland-based company stops harmful plastics from reaching oceans and is a "revive our oceans" nominee.
Air is pumped through a perforated tube placed diagonally on the riverbed to create a "curtain" of bubbles. This directs plastic up to the surface and into a waste collection system without disturbing wildlife or boats.
"Rivers are the highway to our oceans, transporting pollution all the way there. The Great Bubble Barrier stops plastic from reaching the sea by intercepting it from inland waterways," Co-Founder and COO Francis Zoet said. "With our Amsterdam system we are currently preventing 8,000 pieces of plastic from reaching the North Sea each month. But we don't plan to stop there: the first international systems are on the agenda and we can't wait to tackle pollution across our borders."
Only a few more days to go until the official winners of the @EarthshotPrize 2022 will be announced during the award ceremony.

Earthshot Event Serves Plant-Based Food
The Earthshot Prize awards ceremony taking place Friday at Boston's MGM Music Hall is implementing eco-friendly themes and urging all event participants and attendees to do the same.
Earthshot CEO Hannah Jones told The Daily Mail that all guests will be served vegan or vegetarian food, with single-use plastics banned from the event. Guests are also being encouraged to be mindful of their transportation choices while traveling to the event, with unnecessary air travel discouraged and use of electric or hybrid vehicles encouraged in the city when needed.
Jones told The Daily Mail that attendees have been urged to "consider their clothing" by using outfits they or others have worn previously, rather than purchasing a new outfit exclusively for the ceremony. The makeup that will be used for presenters will be mostly vegan and certified cruelty-free, according to the paper.
The eco-friendly themes will also reportedly be visible inside the venue, with the green carpet used during the first Earthshot Prize ceremony in 2021 rolled out again in Boston, instead of a red carpet. Locally-grown plants and flowers will decorate the space and will be recycled back into the community once the ceremony is over. The paper reported that the event will use LED battery-operated lights and will be mostly making use of local crews to tape the event for the BBC's broadcast next week, instead of flying large numbers of BBC crew members into the U.S.
As an organization focused on the environment, Jones told the paper that the Earthshot Prize "will assiduously strive to think about our own environmental impact with everything we do."
The Prince and Princess of Wales will be attending Friday's awards ceremony, with Kate Middleton expected to announce one of the award winners and Prince William expected to speak at the conclusion of the event. Earlier this week, the Earthshot Prize announced that actor Rami Malek and actresses Shailene Woodley and Catherine O'Hara will also present awards at the ceremony, which will be hosted by broadcaster Clara Amfo and actor Daniel Dae Kim.

Prince Pens Essay About Earthshot
The Prince of Wales described himself as a "stubborn optimist" in a guest essay about his Earthshot Prize initiative that HuffPost published on Friday.
Prince William, who is in Boston with the Princess of Wales for their first U.S. trip since 2014, began his essay by writing, "I am an optimist. A stubborn optimist."
Prince William wrote that he is "thrilled" the Earthshot Prize's second awards ceremony since its inception will be held in the U.S. He and Kate Middleton will be attending the star-studded ceremony at Boston's MGM Music Hall on Friday. At the event, five winners will each receive more than $1 million to help fund their environmental projects.
In his essay, Prince William wrote that his initiative was "inspired" by the goal former President John F. Kennedy set during a 1962 speech to land a person on the moon by the end of that decade. The goal of the Earthshot Prize is to identify and support "ground-breaking solutions to the greatest challenges our planet faces" for the rest of this decade, Prince William said in the essay.
Prince William noted the "wave of innovation" that Kennedy's moonshot speech inspired and concluded his essay by writing, "In this critical decade, I invite you all to be optimistic, to support the game-changers and to believe in the power of human ingenuity."

The book, she was told, was previously signed by her father-in-law, now King Charles III, in 1986.
Princess Catherine met with staffers in a conference room to discuss the work the center is doing to improve the life outcomes of young children facing adversity, a cause close to the princess' heart. Research into the importance of early childhood years has been a key platform for the princess.

She was seen taking notes on the experts' presentation, according to a reporter in the room.

Biden to Meet Prince William at JFK Library
President Joe Biden will meet with Prince William later today in Boston, the White House confirmed.
Biden will be in Boston for a Democratic fundraiser, which coincides with the Prince and Princess of Wales' trip ahead of the Earthshot Prize ceremony Friday evening.
The president is expected to leave D.C. for Boston around 1 p.m., according to his schedule. He will then reportedly meet Prince William at around 2:50 p.m. at the JFK Library before participating at a phone bank at 4:10 p.m.
Biden will then attend a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to raise money for Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock's runoff campaign.
"The President is willing to help Senator Warnock any way he can, however the senator wants him to get involved," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week.
Prince William will tour the Moonshot exhibit, which inspired his Earthshot prize, at the JFK Library with Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.
Royals Prepare for Earthshot Prize Ceremony
The Prince and Princess of Wales are preparing for the Earthshot prize ceremony Friday night in Boston.
The three-day trip took the royals to a Celtics basketball game, a climate tech startup incubator, a nonprofit focused on troubled and at-risk youth and a walk near Boston Harbor to learn about the threat of rising sea levels.
This will all culminate Friday evening at Boston's MGM Music Hall for the Earthshot Prize Awards.

The Earthshot is a global challenge Prince William and the Royal Foundation founded in 2020 to reverse the impact of climate change in the next decade.
Prince William and Princess Catherine will honor 15 finalists working on innovative solutions to repair the planet.
The royals will announce the five new winners who will receive over $1 million in prize money and access to a global support network to continue their mission.

Royals Stroll Through Piers Park with Mayor Wu
After touring a climate tech startup lab and youth-focused nonprofit, the royals joined Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for a stroll through Piers Parks in East Boston.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were also joined by Mayor Wu's climate chief Rev. Mariama White-Hammond.

White-Hammond also spoke at the welcome event at city Hall Wednesday night. Ger remarks highlighted the state's legacy of colonialism and racism that led to the loss of species and lasting oppression.

The royals will reportedly learn about the threat of rising sea levels and its impact on the Boston Harbor.
Representatives from several environmental groups, including Boston Harbor Now, Stone Living Lab, the Trustees of Reservations and The Harborkeepers, also joined the royals.

The Prince of Wales appeared in his first TikTok video earlier this week to promote his Earthshot Prize initiative.
The Earthshot Prize posted the video featuring Prince William on Tuesday.

More than 1,800 TikTok users liked the video and more than 150 people left comments by Thursday afternoon.
Some commenters praised the Earthshot Prize. Others welcomed Prince William to TikTok and said they were happy to see him using the platform.
"Stunning, Welcome to TikTok Your Royal Highness," one commenter wrote. Others wrote, "Welcome to TikTok," and "Glad to see the Prince of Wales on TikTok."
PBS, which will air the awards ceremony in the U.S. next week, also left a comment that said, "See you there!" The Earthshot Prize responded to the network's comment, writing, "We can't wait!"
The Prince and Princess of Wales landed in Boston the day after the video was posted to begin their first U.S. trip in eight years. They will attend the Earthshot award ceremony at Boston's MGM Music Hall, during which five winners will receive a £1 million prize to support their environmental projects.
Kate's Fashion 'Means Business,' Expert Says
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has greeted American crowds and officials with professional fashion choices during her first two days in Boston.
Celebrity stylist and royal fashion expert Miranda Holder told Newsweek that Kate has a number of factors to consider, from promoting British design abroad to remaining respectful of the current socio/political climate.
"If her tour wardrobe is anything to go by, it's clear that Kate means business in Boston and to date she has cut an elegant if conservative figure, showcasing the best of British tailoring in Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Mulberry," she said.
When she arrived at Boston's Logan International Airport, Princess Catherine wore a black Alexander McQueen pantsuit.
This pantsuit is a favorite of the princess and she owns this pantsuit in white, navy and pink.

She completed the look with a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings that previously belonged to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana.

When the royals met with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and her family, Kate wore a green plaid Burberry dress. She accessorized with Shyla earrings and a Mulberry top-handle bag.

During the outdoor welcome event, she added a dark Alexander McQueen coat.

While sitting courtside at the Celtics basketball game, the princess wore a vintage blue Chanel blazer, black pants and pumps. She also dawned gold hoops from Shyla and a Laura Lombardi gold link chain necklace.

Holder said the royals are wearing darker colors while they continue to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
"This is a new era for Kate as she gets ever closer to the throne and her sartorial choices reflect the mood - that, and the still recent death of Her Majesty the Queen adding a sombre undertone to her wardrobe. It may be back to work, but this family are still very much in mourning after losing possibly their greatest figurehead ever," she said.
Holder added that Kate's wardrobe on day one was "a little unexciting."
"The fashion was designed to not pull focus from a cause which is very dear to the Prince's heart," she said.
On day two of the trip, the princess wore a pink pussycat-bow blouse under a maroon pantsuit with matching pumps while she toured a climate tech startup incubator and a nonprofit focused on troubled and at-risk youth.
Her accessories included a maroon Chanel bag and gold hoop earrings.

Holder said she is "hoping for a little more fashion fun" in the final hours of the royals trip to "satisfy Kate's fashionista-fans."
"But alas I'm not convinced that we will witness this on this particular occasion," she added.

"Brain science is key to everything they do, as is bringing parts of the public system together to create better outcomes for young people," the Prince and Princess said in a tweet.

"Their visit is so exciting for us," Julia Travaglini, Greentown Labs' senior vice president of marketing and communications, told WBZ-TV Tuesday.
Travaglini said the royals met five of the lab's startups working to "deploy technologies that align with the sectors they're focused on," including cleaning the air, reviving the oceans and fixing the climate.
"We hope the Prince and Princess leave inspired and encouraged and enthusiastic about the work being done here in the Boston region and that they see Boston and the Northeast as a hub of climate action and climate innovation," Travaglini said.

Netflix Drops Trailer for Prince Harry, Megan Docuseries
On the second day of the Prince and Princess of Wales' trip to Boston, Prince Harry and Megan Markle dropped the trailer for their upcoming documentary series.

In a short clip, Meghan explains the couple's motivation for taking part in the project, saying, "When the stakes are this high, doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?"
This comes in the middle of Prince William and Kate Middleton's three-day trip to Boston ahead of the Earthshot prize ceremony Friday. There is no plan for Prince William to meet with his brother during his first U.S. trip since Prince Harry and Megan moved to the states.
In the trailer, Markle appears to be crying in not one but three clips in a fast-paced montage that at one point cuts to Kate and William as the sound of broken glass plays over the top.
In the trailer, Harry can be heard saying, "No one sees what happens behind closed doors" and adding, "I had to do everything I could to protect my family."

Prince, Princess Light City Hall Green
The Prince and Princess of Wales helped illuminate Boston City Hall green on Wednesday at the conclusion of an event welcoming the royals to the city.
The green lights glowing outside Boston City Hall are in recognition of the Earthshot Prize initiative, which Prince William launched last year. Boston is hosting the second Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on Friday, during which five winners will receive £1 million to support projects aimed at addressing environmental issues by 2030.
Massachusetts' governor-elect, Maura Healey, delivered remarks during the Wednesday evening event at Boston City Hall. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also welcomed the royals to the city before Prince William addressed the crowd. He told attendees that Boston was an "obvious choice" for the location of the 2022 Earthshot Prize awards ceremony.
After speaking about the Earthshot initiative and this year's finalists, Prince William stood alongside Kate Middleton, Healey and Wu. All four individuals had their hands poised over a large green button as the crowd counted down. They all pressed the button at once, lighting the city building in green.
The moment was shared on social media by The Sun reporter Matt Wilkinson.

Royals Fly Commercial, Surprising Passengers
Passengers on a commercial flight from London to Boston got a surprise midair when they realized the Prince and Princess of Wales were on their plane.
The royals were the first to board the flight and sat in the front behind a closed curtain, WHDH-TV reported.
But then Prince William and Kate Middleton walked about the cabin to greet the other passengers.

— Kimberly Bookman (@KimberlyBookman) November 30, 2022
"They were just pleasant, asking what [our] purpose was in London, which is where we flew out of, Heathrow, and then where [our] end destinations were," Brent Suttles told the station.
Some passengers were surprised the royals were on their flight, even with the delayed boarding and extra security.
One passenger described Prince William as "a lot slimmer" than she expected, while calling Kate "beautiful, as one would expect."
"Wasn't expecting that today when I got on my plane," she told WHDH.
While some may have expected the heir to the British throne to charter a private flight to the United States, the choice to fly commercial makes sense considering the royals' commitment to fighting climate change. Taking commercial flights instead of private flights is much more environmentally conscious, as they cut down on CO2 emissions.
There was a bit of controversy at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change conference when over 100 private jets landed in Scotland for the event, including one chartered by now-King Charles III. This led to accusations of hypocrisy of summit-goers for contributing to the problem they were trying to solve.
"Private jets are very prestigious but it is difficult to avoid the hypocrisy of using one while claiming to be fighting climate change," Matt Finch, U.K. policy manager at the Transport and Environment campaign group, told Forbes at the time.

Prince Delivers Remarks in Boston
The Prince of Wales addressed a crowd outside Boston City Hall on Wednesday evening shortly after he and the Princess of Wales arrived for their first U.S. visit in eight years.
Prince William and Kate Middleton traveled to Boston for this year's Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, which is being held Friday at Boston's MGM Music Hall.
After remarks by Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Prince William thanked the crowds for "braving the rain" to attend their welcome event. He said he and the Princess of Wales are "absolutely delighted" to be visiting.
Prince William then spoke of his Earthshot Prize initiative, which held its first awards ceremony last year. This year's event marks the first time the Earthshot Prize is traveling to the U.S. to announce five winners, each of whom will receive £1 million to support their climate-related innovation projects.
"There are two reasons why Boston was the obvious choice to be the home of the Earthshot Prize in its second year," Prince William said. He explained the inspiration behind the Earthshot initiative, which draws from former President John F. Kennedy's moonshot speech.
"It was that moonshot speech that inspired me to launch the Earthshot Prize, with the aim of doing the same for climate change as President Kennedy did for the space race," Prince William said. "And where better to hold this year's award ceremony than President Kennedy's hometown, in partnership with his daughter and the foundation that continues his legacy."
Prince William then said the city "was also the obvious choice because your universities, research centers and a vibrant startup scene make you a global leader in science, innovation and boundless ambition." He thanked Wu for being "a leader in putting climate policies at the heart of your administration."
Prince William said he and the Princess of Wales "cannot wait to celebrate the Earthshot Prize finalists later this week" and are "both looking forward to spending the next few days learning about the innovative ways that people in Massachusetts are tackling climate change."

Gov-Elect, Boston Mayor Welcome Royals
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Maura Healey, the governor-elect of Massachusetts, welcomed Prince William and Kate Middleton at Boston City Hall on Wednesday evening.
The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Boston on Wednesday afternoon for a three-day U.S. visit, their first in eight years. They are visiting for Prince William's Earthshot Prize initiative, which will present five awards during a ceremony in Boston on Friday.
The appearance at Boston City Hall marked the royals' first public event of their Massachusetts visit. During brief remarks delivered at the event, Healey said the city is "absolutely ecstatic, so excited and delighted" to welcome them.
Healey said the royals show "day in and day out" their "commitment to climate issues and social change, as well as an unyielding commitment to our young people."
Massachusetts at large is "committed to a transition to a clean energy economy that benefits, not further burdens, communities who are disproportionately enduring environmental harms," Healey said.
After Healey's remarks, Wu took the stage to welcome Prince William and Kate to Boston.
"We are thrilled to have the great honor of hosting this year's Earthshot awards, to advance that same galvanizing commitment to the urgent action necessary to solve climate change and repair our planet," Wu said. "Because Boston is fundamentally a city of problem-solvers."
Crowds Wait in the Rain for Royal Arrival
Crowds of people could be seen gathering outside Boston City Hall as they waited for the Prince and Princess of Wales to arrive.
The event at City Hall will kick off the royals' first U.S. visit in eight years. They are in Boston for Prince William's Earthshot Prize initiative, which will distribute awards to five winners during a ceremony at Boston's MGM Music Hall on Friday.
Local reporters shared video clips on social media Wednesday evening showing people standing in the rain and taking shelter beneath umbrellas as they waited for Prince William and Kate to arrive. Hundreds of people were reportedly waiting to catch a glimpse of the royals at City Hall.

US Provides Security During Royal Visit
A branch of the U.S. Department of State is in charge of providing protection to Prince William and Kate Middleton during their visit to Boston this week.
Agents with the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), part of the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, are responsible for providing protection for "the people, property, and information crucial to the State Department's role in maintaining a diplomatic presence and conducting of foreign policy around the world," according to the bureau's website. Additionally, the bureau says the DSS "assists foreign diplomatic missions in the United States on all security-related matters."
Prince William and Kate arrived in Boston on Wednesday, but the DSS reportedly began preparing for their trip in September. Andrew Wroblewski, the deputy assistant secretary and assistant director of the DSS, told ABC News that the bureau has been working with officials in the United Kingdom to prepare for the royal visit. Part of the preparation for any dignitary visiting the U.S. involves assessing whatever threat levels may be against them, he said.
Matthew O'Brien of the DSS Boston field office told ABC News that 11 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies were involved in preparing for their visit. He said Prince William and Kate's three-day U.S. trip has been "choreographed down to the minute."

Prince William and The Royal Foundation launched the Earthshot Prize with the goal of identifying ways to "repair our planet" by 2030, according to the Earthshot Prize website. This year's awards ceremony is coming to the U.S. for the first time in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Foundation. Prince William has linked the goals of the Earthshot Prize with former President John F. Kennedy's "Moonshot" space exploration goals of the 1960s.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to receive an award in New York City next week for their contributions to racial justice and mental health.
The Ripple of Hope award will be presented by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. The nonprofit said in an October news release that it first invited the duke and duchess of Sussex to become award laureates in March. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also among this year's Ripple of Hope award recipients.
Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and president of Robert F. They are being recognized for their work through their Archewell Foundation, the nonprofit said.
The duke and duchess "embody the type of moral courage that my father once called the 'one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change'," Kennedy said in the release.
During a later conversation with the Spanish magazine Vanitatis, Kennedy also highlighted the response by Prince Harry and Meghan to structural racism in the United Kingdom.

Palace Staffer Resigns Amid Racist Comments to Charity CEO
A Buckingham Place staffer has resigned over her comments toward a Black charity founder.
Lady Susan Hussey, the King's Lady of the Household and former lady-in waiting to the late Queen, has stepped down after she repeatedly questioned the background of Ngozi Fulani, the CEO of of Sistah Space, an organization helping women of African and Caribbean heritage affected by domestic and sexual violence.
Fulani was at the palace for an event focused on ending domestic violence. She said a Palace employee pushed her hair aside to look at her name badge and asked her where she was from. When Fulani said she was British, Hussey repeatedly pushed Fulani on what part of Africa she was from.
In a post on social media, Fulani said she told the person her parents came to Britian in the 1950s and that she is a British national.
"Oh I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean," Hussey allegedly told Fulani.
To which she responded, "No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality."
Mixed feelings about yesterday's visit to Buckingham Palace. 10 mins after arriving, a member of staff, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my name badge. The conversation below took place. The rest of the event is a blur.

Thanks @ManduReid & @SuzanneEJacob for support?? pic.twitter.com/OUbQKlabyq
Mandu Reid, leader of the U.K.'s Women's Equality Party, corroborated Fulani's story.
"I was right there. I witnessed this firsthand," she said in a tweet. "We were at an event that was supposed to celebrate our work. For people like Lady SH, people like us will never really belong here."
Buckingham Palace said the remarks were "unacceptable and deeply regrettable."
"We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details," the Palace said in a statement.
The Palace said the individual expressed her "profound apologies for the hurt caused" and has stepped aside from her honorary role with "immediate effect."
The statement concluded "all members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times."
The Palace also said it reached out to Fulani and invited her to "discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes."
Hussey is a long-time trusted friend of the royal family and is also the godmother of Prince William.
A spokesman for the Prince of Wales condemned the racists comments, saying "racism has no place in our society."
"The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect," they said.
Fulani later thanked others for support and said she does not wish to reveal the name of the Palace staffer involved.
"It is the system that needs to be revised," she said through the Sistah Space twitter account. "Yes the person was offensive, but it serves no purpose to name [and] shame her, it would make us just as bad. We prefer that this be handled kindly."
Thanks everyone for their support. It is not our wish to reveal the person involved, it is the system that needs to be revised.

Boston Mayor 'Grateful' for Earthshot
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu posted a video message on social media Wednesday morning in which she welcomed Prince William and Kate to the city and expressed gratitude for the Earthshot Prize's impact.
Wu said Boston is "celebrating" the Earthshot Prize's arrival in the U.S. this week. The Friday awards ceremony in Boston will mark the first time the Earthshot Prize has traveled to the U.S. since Prince William and The Royal Foundation launched it in 2020.
Today we welcome @EarthshotPrize to Boston! Excited to honor the finalists working to build a greener planet for all! #EarthshotBoston2022 pic.twitter.com/rAIaevvhbX
— Mayor Michelle Wu 吳弭 (@MayorWu) November 30, 2022
Wu explained in her video message that the Earthshot Prize aims to encourage and support "the innovators and leaders working urgently to design solutions that will keep our planet livable." She then highlighted some of the ways in which Boston is addressing climate change, including through electric buses, implementing curbside composting and divesting in fossil fuels. Boston "is building climate action into every part of our city," she said.
"The future of our communities, our children and our planet is worth fighting for," Wu said. "We're so grateful to Prince William and the Earthshot Prize for inspiring the world to collaborate boldly and for recognizing Boston's climate leadership with the honor of hosting this year's award ceremony. On behalf of the people of our city, welcome to Boston!"
The 2022 Earthshot Prize Awards is scheduled to take place Friday at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway. The ceremony is slated to be filmed on Friday and will air Monday in the U.S. on PBS. The Princess of Wales will be one of the ceremony's presenters.
Royals Will Reportedly Not See Prince Harry During Trip
Prince William will reportedly not see his brother Prince Harry during his trip to the United States.
A source close to the Prince and Princess of Wales told ETOnline Monday that the couple has "no plans" to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their three-day trip in Boston.
This is Prince William and Kate Middleton's first U.S. trip since 2014 and the first since Prince Harry and Megan Markle stepped down as senior members of the royal family and moved to California in 2020.
Prince Harry and Megan will be in New York next week to receive the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award.
The brothers did see each other in England after Queen Elizabeth II died in September. But royal family reporters note the rift between them has deepened over the years, especially since the Sussex's criticized the royal family of racism and insensitivity towards Markle during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
"You could say that the royal family, particularly as far as America is concerned, have had a bit of a bumpy ride of late," Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine, told the Associated Press.
"They've come in for huge amounts of criticism on the back of 'The Crown' and also the Oprah Winfrey interview, which has not particularly reflected well on the House of Windsor, so I think it's a good opportunity whilst they're in the U.S. ... to sort of redress the balance if at all possible," he continued.
Royals Have Packed Itinerary for Three-Day Trip
Ahead of the Earthshot prize ceremony Friday, the Prince and Princess of Wales will make several stops in and around Boston.
In addition to climate change, William and Kate will visit organizations that focus on mental health and childhood development.
"During their trip, which will take place between Wednesday 30th November and Friday 2nd December, Their Royal Highnesses will get to know the City of Boston, including learning about how it is taking ambitious action to combat the effects of climate change, ahead of The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony on the Friday evening," the Royal Family said in a statement.
The visit officially begins with a private meeting with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu in her office before a welcome event outside City Hall at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both Wu and the royal couple are expected to give speeches.
On Thursday, the royals will learn about local climate innovators at Greentown Labs, a climate tech startup incubator in Somerville, at 10:30 a.m. ET.
"Recognizing the significant challenges that the coastal city of Boston faces as a result of climate change, The Prince and Princess will see for themselves the work that local organizations are doing to mitigate the risk of rising sea levels," the Royal Family statement said.
The Prince and Princess' final day in Boston will be packed.
They will visit Harvard University's Center on Developing Child in Cambridge at 11:15 a.m. ET Friday. The Harvard Center has collaborated with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, a branch of the Royal Foundation. The Royal Family called the Harvard Center a "long-standing friend" in a statement.
The trip concludes with the Earthshot prize ceremony will take pace at Boston's MGM Music Hall at 8 p.m. ET. The ceremony will honor 15 finalists and award prize money to five winners.
A tour of the John F Kennedy Library and Museum with Carolina Kennedy and a trip to Chelsea's Roca Inc., an organization that works with young people dealing with poverty, racism and incarceration, are also on the itinerary.
Royal Couple Makes First Visit to U.S. Since 2014
The Prince and Princess of Wales will be in Boston Wednesday for a three-day visit ahead of the Earthshot prize ceremony Friday.
The Earthshot prize was founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020. It was inspired by President John F. Kennedy's 1961 challenge to the U.S. to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The prize aims to "find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet this decade."
The winners of the prize, about $1.2 million, will be announced at a star-studded ceremony at Boston's MGM Music Hall Friday. There will be winners in five separate categories: nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination and climate change.
We have arrived!

Prince William has followed in his father, King Charles III, footsteps as a leading voice in the fight against climate change.
The royal couple will also make other visits in and around Boston highlighting local organizations that focus on youth issues and climate innovation.
"The prince and princess are looking forward to spending time in Boston, and to learning more about the issues that are affecting local people, as well as to celebrating the incredible climate solutions that will be spotlighted through the Earthshot Prize," their Kensington Palace office said in a statement.
This marks the couple's first overseas visit since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and their first trip to the United States since 2014.
