Two people were found dead on campus at University of California (UC) Irvine on Tuesday afternoon, according to officials.

UCI's Office of the Chancellor reported the incident, saying that the two victims have not yet been identified and it's not yet known what happened to them, but "preliminary information" suggests the possibility that "at least one death occurred at the hands of another."

The University of California, Irvine Police Department (UCIPD) responded to an incident at 214 Pereira Drive, Social Science Plaza, at around 3:52 p.m. on Tuesday after receiving calls about people "on the ground outside a multi-story building," FOX 11 reported.

When they arrived, they found the bodies of a man and woman at the bottom of Social Science Plaza, Building B, according to an IPD press release. A UCI spokesperson told FOX 11 that one of the victims was a former student.

As of Tuesday night, it was not yet known if the woman was in any way affiliated with the university.

The two deaths are being investigated by the Irvine Police Department (IPD), which informed the university that there's no ongoing danger to the college community. Detectives believe the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide and that the two victims might be related, according to the IPD press release. Their names are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Irvine police believe "this to be an isolated incident and there is no known danger to the community," as reported in the press release.

Late on Tuesday night, UCIPD tweeted that the "situation that was previous[ly] reported to you by UCIPD has been resolved. Campus is safe to resume normal activity."

According to UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman, members of the UCI community have been contacted by police to help with the investigation and share their knowledge of what may have happened.

Newsweek has contacted UCIPD and IPD for comment.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the UCI Police Department at 949-824-5223.

The incident at the UCI campus comes in the midst of the high-profile case of the murder of four University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho, last month. Investigations into the fatal stabbing of the four students, who according to the county coroner were likely attacked in their sleep, is now in its fourth week without police having identified a suspect.
