Chris Columbus is the famed director behind legendary Christmas movie Home Alone and family favorites like Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone, so it's no surprise his 2018 movie The Christmas Chronicles was also a huge success.

Columbus produced the Netflix festive film, which was directed by Clay Kaytis and written by Matt Lieberman, and during its first week of release four years ago it was watched by over 20 million people.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn star in the heart-warming hit, which returned for a sequel in 2020. And as the holiday season continues, fans are desperate to know if they will be back for a third installment.

Newsweek as everything we know so far about The Christmas Chronicles, including the plot of the first two movies and what we know about a third film.

The Christmas Chronicles Plot

In the first movie, The Christmas Chronicles, a sister and brother, Kate and Teddy Pierce (Darby Camp and Judah Lewis), hatch a plan to catch Santa Claus (Russell) on camera on Christmas Eve.

After staking out Santa's arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, causing it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. A wild night then unfolds as Kate and Teddy are hurled into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about.

The pair must work together with Santa—as you've never seen him before–and his loyal elves to save Christmas before it's too late.

In the second movie The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, which was released in 2020, two years have passed since Kate and Teddy saved Christmas, and a lot has changed.

Kate is now a cynical teenager who is forced to reluctantly spend Christmas in Cancun, Mexico with her mom, played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and her mom's new boyfriend, played by Fast and Furious franchise star Tyrese Gibson.

The boyfriend has a son of his own, Jack (Jahzir Bruno), who also joins them on their vacation.

Initially, Kate is unwilling to accept this new version of her family and even decides to run away to escape spending time with them.

Suddenly, a mysterious troublemaker named Belsnickel threatens to destroy the North Pole and end Christmas for good, leading Kate and Jack to be pulled into a brand new adventure with Santa Claus.

The second Christmas Chronicles movie was written and directed by Columbus and saw Russell's real-life wife, Goldie Hawn, reprise her role as Mrs. Claus after she briefly appeared in the original film.

Netflix is yet to confirm whether there be another Christmas Chronicles film coming to the streaming site.

Newsweek has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Russell, who plays Santa, told The New York Times in 2020 that he could be open to taking part in a sequel to the films, though he had "no idea" about Netflix's plans.

Columbus told ComicBook.com the same year that, at the time, no discussions had taken place with Netflix yet. He was also unsure about what a third film would be about, saying: "It's interesting because right now I can't even think about what the third potential movie could be."

"But we're certainly set up to open up this world even more," he added.

The first two Christmas Chronicles movies are available to stream now on Netflix.
